Lesson Summary
Ask students to share traditions of the 4 th of July
Teach facts about how the holiday came to be
Reiterate that information by reading a short story
Formative Assessment: quiz students on what theyve already
learned
Play God Bless the U.S.A. and Star Spangled Banner and
discuss their relevance to the 4 th of July
Art Project: students make their own fireworks using a wide
variety of materials

The students will be able to create their interpretation of fireworks
using various materials that are available to them.

Literacy
The students will be able to write a story that includes what they have
learned about the 4 th of July.

Social Studies
The students will be able to recite the history of the 4 th of July and
relate it to various national songs

ANTICIPATORY SET
Ask questions to get them interested
Can anyone name the major holiday in July that Americans
celebrate?
Is it when we eat Turkey?
It it when we carve pumpkins?
Is it when we hunt for eggs in our yard?
If not, can five people raise their hand and tell me a tradition
Americans do during this holiday?

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
At the end of the lesson, have students write a short story
that includes at least 3 facts that they learned throughout the
lesson
Students can volunteer to read theirs aloud to the class
Turn it in at the end so the teacher is able to see how much
information the students retained
