Assignment 5 Seed Collection

Assignment 5 Seed Collection

My seed collection is for a library in the 60067 zip code, which covers the village
of Palatine, Illinois. According to the United States Census Bureau, Palatine has a
population of 38,585, of which approximately 5,000 are between the ages of 10-19. This
collection is for those 5,000 teens and tweens. The collection is mostly fiction, although
it contains a few nonfiction titles as well. Graphic novels are not included, though if this
collection were real, I would make adding a graphic novel collection a priority.
With very few exceptions, most titles have been chosen based on reviews from
Kirkus Reviews or Booklist Online. The only exception is James Pattersons Maximum
Ride series, where only the first few titles were reviewed by Booklist. Information for
the rest of the series was pulled from Amazon.com.
The collection focuses on fiction because young adult nonfiction is a small market
for most topics, teens will simply use the adult nonfiction collection. The six
nonfiction titles included in this collection deal with a variety of subjects and issues
relevant to teens, such as sports-related brain injuries or gender issues. Some memoirs
are also included.
For the fiction collection, I tried to collect a balance of genres to appeal to a
variety of reading interests. Other than mainstream fiction, the genres most strongly
represented are science fiction and fantasy. This is not intentional. The number of
fantasy books is inflated by two lengthy series: Pattersons Maximum Ride and Cassandra
Clares Mortal Instruments. Science fiction was similarly inflated by the inclusion of
several popular trilogies such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Lunar
Chronicles. Also, both Kirkus and Booklist review a significant number of titles in these

genres, and I skipped over many interesting titles in an attempt to leave enough budget to
represent other reading interests. Otherwise, I made an effort to collect title from diverse
genres such as mystery, thrillers, historical fiction, paranormal romance, and adventure. I
also included several verse novels and short story collections.
Overall, the collection heavily favors newer titles. The oldest title chosen is from
2001, and the vast majority were published in 2010 or later. This ensures a current
collection with titles that teens and tweens are interested in reading. I included a mix of
well-known authors such as John Green, Walter Dean Myers, and Holly Black, as well as
newer authors like Cal Armistead and Claire J. Griffin.
Palatine has nearly 5,000 people of Asian descent, of which the largest groups are
Indian, Chinese, and Korean. There are also about 2,400 Hispanic people. Unfortunately
the Census Bureaus American Fact Finder website does not reveal how many of those
are teens, but the collection attempts nonetheless to appeal to those and other ethnic
groups by including books written by or with characters of varying backgrounds. A
similar attempt was made to include other minority populations based on gender,
sexuality, and disability. In short, the collection is geared to offer something for
everyone, without pigeonholing anyone into a particular niche.
I encountered a few noteworthy challenges while designing this collection. First,
genre labels are not always precise, which makes it difficult to adequately include genres
such as horror or magical realism. Second, there seems to be a shortage of young adult
books by Indian authors that are reviewed by Kirkus or Booklist. If such authors proved
to be in demand, I would have to step outside of those review sources to meet that
demand.
