What Is Smart-grid??
The Energy Independence And Security
Act defines the term Smart Grid as the
Modernization of the Electricity Delivery
System that Monitors, Protects, &
Automatically Optimizes the Operation of Its
Interconnected Elements.

What Is Smart-grid??
Transfer of electric energy using two way
digital communication
It is not a substitute for traditional grid but
just an enhancement

Why We Need Smart-grid??

Todays Electrical Grid suffers from a number of
problems, including that it is:
Old (the average age of power plants is 35 years)
Dirty (more than half of our electricity is generated from
coal)
Inefficient (the delivered efficiency of electricity is only
Up to 45%)
Vulnerable (Due to Blackouts)

Why We Need Smart-grid??

India is having the Weakest
Electrical Grid In The World

India losses money for every

unit of Electricity sold

Features Of Smart-grid
Smart grids can benefit both Energy Consumers
and Producers.
Smart grid technologies provide predictive
information & recommendations to utilities, their
suppliers, and their customers on How best to
manage power.

Features Of Smart-grid
Smart grids can help reduce Transmission and
Distribution losses
Smart Grid enabled distribution would reduce
carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25%.

Components Of Smart Grid

The Smart Grid is composed of a myriad of
technologies
that
enable
the
precise
Measurement and Communication of electricity
production, transportation, and usage, while
providing responsiveness at each level from the
end user all the way to the power generator

Role Of Smart Metering System

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) includes
the both the physical smart meter as well as the
communications infrastructure to transport the data
that is generated

16

Role Of Smart Metering System

Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) will allow for
remote meter monitoring and accurately
integrated real-time information to flow both
from the source to the generators and viceversa.
These appliances then react according to preset
consumer preferences and decide how to
operate.

Role Of Smart Metering System

No need for Human interaction to make the
appliances react properly and efficiently

Smart Grid Projects In India

Smart grid projects in India are being implemented on a
Pilot basis and are mostly funded by Government
finances or external grants.
Among these, Distribution Reform, Upgrades And
Management (DRUM) is a USD 30 million bilateral
project developed by the U.S. Agency for international
development (USAID) and the Indian ministry of power,
with USAID training Indian utility personnel in the
commercial, technical, safety, communication, and
management aspects of electricity distribution.

If Implemented
Dependence on Fossil Fuels Reduces
Lower CO2 Emissions
Empowers Consumers to make Smart Energy
Choices
Positively Impacts Our Nations Energy Stability
Power Theft Can Be Reduced

Public Awareness
Finally, the benefits provided by smart grids need
to be clearly communicated in order to raise public
awareness.
The lack of customer interest not only stems from a
generally low level of awareness of the size of
Electricity bills.
