PROJECTION KALEIDOSCOPES NOS. 71,106, 71,121
Decorative lighting devices are quickly gaining popularity across the country and
around the world in discotheques, theaters, home light shows, and parties, Among
the most intriguing of these are the Edmund Projection Kaleidoscopes, No, 71,106
and No, 71,121, These devices essentially consist of a 500 watt projection lamp, a
condensing lens system, a rotating pattern wheel, anda 3"' F.L, anastigmatic kalei-
doscopic projection lens, (See Figure "A",) The entire instrument "is" larger than a
35mm projector, weighs less than six pounds and plugs into any standard household
105 - 125 V, 60 cycle A.C, power outlet,
Moving kaleidoscopic patterns can now be projected on walls, ceilings, floors, or
even dancing girls, Hexagonal patterns formed from revolving pattern wheels will
cover surfaces of 20 to 2,000 square feet at projection distances of 5 to 100 feet.

A "dry" pattern wheel is supplied with the No, 71,106 kaleidoscope, It produces
hundreds of figures in a sequence which repeats itself each 60 seconds, A "wet
wheel," which consists of colored plastic particles floating in a liquid, is provided
with No, 71,121 Liquid Projection Kaleidoscope. As these pieces slip past one an-
other, they combine to form a truly endless array of non-repeating patterns, Each
pattern wheel is available separately for those whowish different effects or for re~
placement purposes, For our artistically inclined customers, blank glass discs to
fit the projection kaleidoscope are available under stock number P-71,087 (set of
2) which can be painted using Edmund Transparent Paints No, 71,067. Many other
user-prepared pattern wheels can be fabricated, including montage wheels prepared
by cutting up pieces of colored filter material, old slides, or movie film, and sand-
wiching them between glass or plastic discs, (2 plastic discs available under stock
number P-70,996.) A polarized color pattern wheel and spinner will provide chang-
ing colors within the kaleidoscopic pattern but the image will be relatively dim due
to the light absorption of the polarizing material, If you wish to try this technique,
the pattern wheel can be made using the materials provided in our Polarized
Color Wheel Kit No. 71,100, The spinner can be assembled from No, 71,099 Polar-
izing Disc, No, 60,763 - 30 R,P,M, Motor, The spinner can be attached to the kalei-
doscope with No, P-60,748 "L" Brackets,
EDMUND SCIENTIFIC CO., BARRINGTON, NEW JERSEY 08007 M2111, Using the hardware provided fasten
the motor (found in cord compart-
ment Fig, D) to the "L" bracket as
shown in Figure B,

Readying the Project
1, Turn projector on its side and remove the 8 ft. power cord housed in the cord
compartment, (See Figure D.) Plug one end of the power cord into the rear re-
ceptacle of the projector, and plug the other end into a 120 volt, A.C, outlet,
2, Plug the cord from the pattern wheel driving motor into a 120 volt A.C, outlet.
3. Turn on the projector by pushing the power switch (located on the base at the
rear of the projector) to the right, The first notch actuates the fan only and in-
sures cooling after the lamp is off, The second notch turns on the lamp while
maintaining ventilation,
The fan is a very important part of your kaleidoscope projector, Without it,
your color wheel and the projector itself would melt under the intense heat
created by the 500 watt lamp, Your kaleidoscope projector is wired so that the
cooling fan runs at all times while the lamp is on, Make certain that the exhaust
vent on the top and intake vent on the side of the projector are kept clear to
prevent the projector from overheating, If mounted near a ceiling, leave enough
space for proper ventilation, ALWAYS ALLOW THE FAN ALONE TO OPERATE
FOR AT LEAST THREE MINUTES AFTER THE LAMP IS TURNED OFF,
MM21--2 ‘SCIENTIFIC CO., BARRINGTON, NEW JERSEY 080074, Even with the fan operating, your pro-
jector will become very warm, There-
fore, it is a good idea to always have
the pattern wheel rotating while the
lamp ison, Ifyou are using the Edmund
"wet-wheel," which is constructed of
plastic, this precaution will be added
insurance against warping, bending,
or melting.
Focusing your projection lens is done manually. Start by making sure the lens
is placed in the projector case with the white mark on top, (See Figure E.)
Push or pull the lens in and out until the projected image is sharply defined on
the screen, wall, or ceiling, Turn the elevating foot on the front of the projector
base for vertical adjustment, To adjust the horizontal position, simply move the
projector itself, If the projected image does not form an evenly segmented hex-
agon, rotate the lens slightly in its mount until an even-sided hexagon is
achieved,
6. It is possible that the pattern wheel has been mounted either too high or too
low in the projector gate, If the pattern wheel does not move, or occasionly
sticks, loosen the screws holding the motor inplace on its bracket and raise the
motor and pattern wheel until it moves freely without restriction, If the edge of
the pattern wheel is visible in the projected image, loosen the motor mounting
screws and lower the motor and pattern wheel until this edge can no longer be
seen in the image,

When the wet wheel has been stopped for any period of time, such as overnight
storage, the particles will sink to the bottom. These particles can be evenly dispersed
in their suspending fluid by allowing the wheel to rotate for a period of 15 minutes,
If a wet-wheel equipped projection kaleidoscope is to be used infrequently during a
light show or in any ofits other numerous applications, it is suggested that the wheel
be kept revolving continuously and the lamp turned on only when desired,

Metal Chimney Old Lamp
EDMUND SCIENTIFIC CO., BARRINGTON, NEW JERSEY Of M23Caring For Your Projector:
TO CHANGE LAMP, remove access cover by liftingthe edge, as shown in Figure
F, Then lift out the metal chimney surrounding lamp, (See Figure 6,) Grasp old lamp
and pull up, without twisting, (See Figure H.) To insert new lamp, align key in center
of lamp base with keyway in socket, Then press lamp down, without twisting, until
lamp is seated,
TO CLEAN REFLECTOR AND CONDENSING LENSES
‘The rear condensing lens and reflector areapart of the chimney assembly, When
the metal chimney is lifted out, they are readily accessible for cleaning. Clean re-
flector and lens with a soft brush or lens cleaning tissue,
Be sure projector has cooled sufficiently before replacing lamp or cleaning condens-
ers and reflector, Asa safety measure, always disconnect the power cord before re-
moving lamp.
‘The rear housing must be removed from the projector to give easy access to front
condenser, Loosen the two screws on bottom rear flange of projector housing about
three turns, Lift up on front end and slide the rear housing back until it can be re-
moved, (See Figure F.)
The front condenser lens is held in place with a spring latch, Press the latch tab
and remove condenser, (See Figure J.) Cleanlens with a soft brush or lens cleaning
tissue,
Replace condenser lens with greater curved surface facing front of projector.
Tighten the screws on bottom flange of housing.
TO REPLACE CHIMNEY. Position chimney around lamp and push firmly until tabs
on side of chimney are located in slots on top of blower wall, Press down to seat
chimney,
TO CLEAN KALEIDOSCOPIC PROJECTION LENS. Pull lens barrel out of projector
and clean lens surface with a soft brush or lens cleaning tissue, Blow any dust from
the mirrors with a syringe or lightly dust them with a soft camel hair brush, First
surface mirrors are used in this lens, DONOT attempt to clean them with lens tis-
sue or cloth as the aluminized surface can be very easily scratched.
