The Impact on
Children
In literacy, gender roles play an
enormous part in the books
children decide to read. When
literacy overpowers an
individual with gender
stereotypes, it is difficult for
the reader to keep their own
ideas about gender. Instead,
their views are masked by the
views of the genderstereotyping author. In
children, this is especially
difficult because they are still
developing ideas about gender
at this young age.

Roles
and
Gender
Identity

The problem with the notion

of gendered reading is that it
assumes that all readers take
up social constructs the same
way. It also avoids looking at
the ways we resist social and
cultural constructs (Brendler

4 Ways to
Respect a Childs
Affirmed Gender

What is a Gender Continuum?

Do I Encourage my Childs Personal,
Gender Behavior?
Gender is not as simple as two categories. Not
everyone fits into the stereotypical role of a
female or a male. Not every woman enjoys
cooking, wearing dresses, and crying with makeup
running down her face and not every male enjoys
hunting, sports, and lifting heavy objects with
their huge biceps. Every individual enjoys a
variety of things. And everything can range from
being masculine to feminine or somewhere in
between. Everyone lies somewhere on the gender
continuum and they dont have to be on one end
or the other; they can fall somewhere in between

if theyd like.
The simple answer is yes. The more honest
answer is please. A child begins to identify with a
gender at a young age, but that gender might not
be his, or her, biological gender. But, keeping your
child from exploring their gender could do more
damage for your child. Instead, respect your
childs affirmed gender.

1. Honor their
preferred noun or
name
2. Let students feel
safe wearing their
clothes and hair they
like
3. Make restroom
accessibility clear with
the student and their
family
4. Avoid situations
where the child is
forced to make a
gender decision
