CINEMATOGRAPHY

Several examples of how various techniques used while shooting in order to enhance the viewers
experience are enlisted:

Shallow focus
Low angle of framing (1st)
Low level of framing (1st)
Close up

The close up view is meant to show the characters

expression. The narrator, attempting to defuse the bomb,
is very tense, whereas Durden, assuming the former would
be unable to do so and foil his plan, looks apparently
relaxed.

Deep focus (High depth of field)

Low level of framing
Low angle of framing
Extreme Long shot
Pan/Tracking Shot

Deep focus enables us to see

both characters clearly even
though they are far apart. As
the scene moves from first
picture to the other, the
camera follows the narrators
movements in one shot which
also help create an element
of surprise as Durden seems
to teleport from one place to
another.

Close Up

The low angle of framing and the

positioning of the camera conveys
that Durden has defeated and has
the upper hand over the narrator.
The low angle of framing indicates
how Durden towers over the
narrator.

The high angle of framing, usually

used to depict smallness, is used in
a similar situation here, to show him
in a poor, dangerous situation, with
a gun to his mouth.

Shallow focus
Low Angle of framing
Medium Close Up

Shallow focus
Close Up
Something like Whip pan

The camera angle depicts Durden in

a dominant position while the shop
owner pleads for his life.

The narrator is confused and shocked to find

out that no one by the name of Tyler Durden
exists. The camera motion intends to portray
his emotional turmoil at the revelation.

Shallow focus
Close up
Pan (Camera moves around the actor)

Deep focus
Extreme long shot

Close up view shows the nervousness/pain of

the narrator while burning his whole hand. The
panning motion is to show that no other person
is present apart from the narrator himself, to
further show that Durden was nothing but a
figment of the narrators imagination.

The lighting in the scene

demonstrates the condition of
Durdens house, far from the well
kept home of the narrator.

Extreme Close Up
Low Angle Shot
The close up view is meant to show
Durdens dazed expression in detail,
especially the smoke coming from
his mouth. His expression tells us
that he knows something is wrong,
which is revealed within seconds.
