What is CLIL?
A teaching and learning trend that is now widely used especially in Europe,
including Italy.
The subject content is taught in another language.
i.e. History, Science taught in Italian
Language is interwoven with the subject content

Objective is to present new topics using a crosscurricular approach while integrating the language
and revising vocabulary and/or structures.

CLIL is a dual focussed educational approach in


which an additional language is used for the
learning and teaching of both content and
language. That is, in the teaching and learning
process, there is a focus not only on content and
not only on language. Each is interwoven, even if
the emphasis is greater on one or the other at a
given time.

Why use CLIL in the primary and junior secondary


school?
Children's educational experience is improved when the subject content
is emphasised more than the language used
The language is learnt in context and therefore becomes more meaningful
CLIL is more motivating and provides a wider variety of stimuli for a
broader range of learners
Gives greater exposure to the language being learnt
Does not require extra teaching time.

Maximum use of language


Content/topic is taught using the language

A CLIL teacher is teaching a subject through


another language rather than teaching a subject in
another language, the same as in a monolingual
class. CLIL teaches subject and language.

CLIL first used in the mainstream


Teachers teaching the content require a minimum language
proficiency of C1 on the proficiency scale in Common European
Framework

2012-2013

CLIL compulsory in specialist languages schools

2014-2015

CLIL compulsory in all secondary schools

A CLIL teacher needs to have language and subject proficiency, CLIL and
subject methodology, subject specific language and use language in class
interactions.
