Bridge of Yesterday
Design

III.

Description
Cable-stayed bridges, like suspension bridges, are held up by cables.
However in a cable-stayed bridge, less cable is required and the towers holding
the cable are proportionally higher. The first known cable-stayed bridge was
designed in 1784 by C.T. (or C.J.) Loscher.
Concept Application
A. 1st and 2nd Conditions of Equilibrium
The 1st Condition of Equilibrium states that the summation of forces in an
object at rest is zero. The Bridge of Yesterday show this condition for it is
essential for a bridge to remain in a stable condition. Also, the 2nd Condition of
Equilibrium, which states that the summation of torque is zero, is depicted by the
bridge by being able to resist rotation that will add to its stability as a structure.
B. Center of Gravity
The point where all forces are concentrated is called the Center of Gravity.
Locating this point is vital in the creation of the bridge. This will be a guide for the
proper location of the supports that will keep the bridge stable.
C. Forces

VI.

VII.

Identifying the external forces acted upon the bridge is a necessary

matter in a creation of a stable bridge since forces will be a factor that will greatly
affect the stability and capacity of the bridge.
D. Measurements
As with any infrastructure, accurate and precise measurements are
required to make the bridge stable.
Methodology
A. Materials
1. Folder
2. Clay
3. Crochet Thread
4. Paint
5. Illustration boards
6. Glue
7. Toothpicks
8. Scissors
B. Procedure
1. Prepare the base using the illustration boards.
2. Use the clay for landscaping.
3. Construct the skeleton of the bridge using the folder.
4. Apply color using the paint.
Recommendation
The group recommends that the future researchers would use stronger materials
like wood and plaster. This project was only limited to inexpensive materials so any
future researchers are recommended to bypass this limitation set.
