them. We made the characters in Cinema4D, however if you would like a free program use Google SketchUp. If you do not plan on doing the 3D printing yourself you can also send the files directly to any 3D printer without needing to open them.
3A You have a 3D printer. The characters
were printed with a Stratasys Dimension 1200 ES using yellow UV reactive filament. You likely don't have this printer, so if you are using a MakerBot you may want to scale up the figurines a little. We printed them at 60mm. Try 80mm to make them a little sturdier. You can use yellow UV reactive filament or go with any other kind of filament if you don't plan to use a UV light.
3B You do not have a 3D printer. Have
no fear. This site is a great resource
to find local 3D printers. http://www.3dhubs.com/ Try to find someone with a Stratasys Dimension 1200 ES. We suggest printing one set of 8 at a time. For example, get a price for the 8 running or walking figurines to start. The turnaround time should be about 24 hours. You can also contact the 3D printer we worked with, http://nextfabstudio.com/ and they can ship anywhere in the world.
4 Optional - Paint the base of the
figurine with black acrylic paint. Do
not paint the underside of the base as you will need to see the numbering system to keep track of order.
5 If you printed the figurines using UV
reactive filament and want to make it
glow, buy a black light flashlight. You can get one for $10 at any Home Depot.
STOP-MOTION These directions are for people already familiar with stop-motion
1 Place your figurine on location
and set up the black light about
3 feet away. Each of the figurines are numbered on the bottom to help you keep track of the order.
2 Shoot 4 exposures of figurine 1
without moving it. Replace with
figurine 2, move position slightly and Shoot 4 exposures of the second figurine. For each position shoot 4 exposures. All running and walking sequences are set up as loops so figurine 8 transitions into figurine 1. Using just 8 figurines your character can run or walk through infinite environments.
3 Assemble your footage. You shot
4 exposures of each figurine to
create animation that matches with the BPM (Beats Per Minute) of We Are Explorers. The feet should hit on the ground perfectly to the beat.
4 Try working with the chorus of We
Are Explorers to match the audio and video. You probably aren't shooting a full 4 minute piece so the chorus should be enough.
