LTC 4240: Art for Children

Lesson Title & Big Idea*: No two snowflakes are exactly alike

Grade Level*: 2

Lesson Overview/Summary*: Read book "No Two Alike" By Keith Baker which is about two birds on a journey exploring
how everything around them is unique, just like snowflakes. Next the students will learn about snow, their crystals, and
the different categories they can be placed in. Last the students will create paper snowflakes of their own and write how
they are unique.

Class Periods Required:

(please circle)

Key Concepts (3-4): What you want the students to know.*

1. Visual Art: Use scissors and construction paper to fold in half and cut
designs to create their own unique snowflake. Paint when completed
2. Literacy: Understand the book "No Two Alike" by Keith Baker and be able to
write at least one paragraph on what makes them unique.
3. Science: Understand what a snowflake is and what categories snowflakes
can fall into based on the snow crystals that they consist of.

Essential Questions (3-4)*:

What did the book "No Two Alike" by Keith Baker teach us?
What is a snowflake?
What are the five categories for grouping snow crystals that we focused on?
What makes you unique, just like snow flakes?

Lesson Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to . . .construct a unique snowflake by using construction paper, scissors, and paint
2. Literacy: The students will be able to . . .understand the book "No Two Alike" by Keith Baker and write reasons that make them unique
3. Science: The students will be able to...define the word snowflake and understand what makes them different

Identify & define common vocabulary that connect the art form with the
other identified content areas:
Snowflake: a cluster of snow crystals that have stuck together as they fall to
the ground
Snow crystal: Different kinds of snow crystals result from certain
combinations of conditions, particularly temperature and moisture level, in
the clouds and near the Earths surface
Unique: Being the only one of its kind, unlike anything else

Content Areas Integrated*:
1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist): (Kenneth Libbrecht's) His photography
highlights the beauty of each individual flake in his book The Art of the
Snowflake.
2. Literacy
3. Science

Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very specific):

1. Ask students if they know what the word unique means? If no student
can answer then define the word for them
2. Read book "No Two Alike" by Keith Baker
3. Ask students to raise their hands to give examples of unique things
around them
4. Present lesson on snowflakes and snow crystals
5. Define what a snowflake is
6. Present the international system for grouping snow crystals into ten
general categories - focus on five of those categories. Explain the
international system applies to falling snow and that the system is based on
the structure of the crystals.
7. Explain that snow crystals change when they reach the ground and lose
their original identity and as a snow crystal melts, its parts blend into a
spherical shape and it ends up as a drop of water
8. Pass out worksheet with different snowflakes that consist of different
snow crystals and have them label which category out of the five we focused
on the snow crystals fall into
9. Students will turn in snow crystal worksheet for teacher evaluation
10. Instruct students to creat their own snowflake
11. Pass out white construction paper and scissors
12. Instruct students to fold piece of paper and start cutting out their design
13. When the students have cut out their snowflakes they will then paint
their snowflake however they like
14. Once their snowflake is complete they will write a paragraph on what
makes them unique just like their snowflake
15. Students can share with the class what they wrote and why they are
unique
15. Students will turn in their snowflake along with their written paragraph
for teacher evaluation

Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*:

Ask students if they can define the word unique
After reading book ask them to name things around them that are unique
Remind them snowflakes are each unique and there are no two exactly alike
Present five categories for grouping snow crystals that we will focus on

Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set):

Remind students that there are no two snowflakes exactly alike
Present definition on snowflake: a cluster of snow crystals stuck together as
they fall to the ground
Remind the students of the five focus categories for grouping snow crystals
Reinforce that each and every one of them are the same way, each unique
String snowflakes together to present this idea to the class

Formative Assessment strategy:

Ask students to raise hands after reading story to see if they can name things
around them that are unique
Ask students to raise their hands to explain why they are unique just like their
snowflake

Summative Assessment strategy*:

Students will turn in sheet on snow crystals where they will label which
snowflake belongs in which of the five categories we learned about
Students will turn in their snowflake along with paragraph about why they
are unique

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

Students will need to have background information about snow for example when it occurs and why (rain below 32 degrees)
Students may have an understanding on the word "unique"
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
Students will be able to explore and experiment creating their own snowflakes using their own designs. Once all of the snowflakes are strung together to
show all the different designs the students created this will allow them to imagine all of the different snowflakes that fall from the sky when it snows. This
activity also allows them to explore why they are different and unique from one another.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
This lesson will reinforce the fact that every single one of them is unique just like each individual snowflake. When the students receive their white paper and
scissors to make their snowflake they will realize that every single one of them will approach designing their snowflakes in their own unique ways. One they
see all of their different snowflakes strung together it will show them all the different ways they could have approached this.

How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
Using formative assessments throughout the lesson and using a summative assessment at the end of the lesson
Returning summative assessment back to students and letting them see errors they made and letting them fix them and turn it back in
Allowing students to continually make corrections until the summative assessment is done correctly

How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students?
If a student is unable to cut out or draw own snowflake there will be pre-made cut out snowflakes that student can have to paint on
If students attention problems sit them next to a model student who will be an example for them to stay on track
What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
Returning summative assessment back to students and letting them see errors they made and letting them fix them and turn it back in
Allowing students to continually make corrections until the summative assessment is done correctly
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
The formative assessments through out the lesson will allow students to raise their hands and share things that are unique around them and what makes
them personally unique, which will show they understand the definition
Students will complete snow crystal worksheet to turn in to share with me what they learned from the lesson
