SAMPLE ASSESSMENT
In this sample, students are measured on their ability to connect
specific facial non manual signals (NMS) to salient features. The
instructor asks the student to make a selection from the multiple
choice format. Four different facial NMS examples are shown with
no English text. One of them best matches the salient features of the
muscular figure show on the upper left.

This test is very efficient and practical in the sense the same clip
and material is shown again to multiple classes, with no variation.
The material can be shown to a large number of students,
simultaneously. There are variations on how the assessment can be
collected, from handwritten answers, to Scan-Tron sheets to a
learning management system (LMS) platform where results are
electronically gathered, and grades automatically administered.

The only caveat about this technology is the reliability of the

technology. When the assessment works, its very efficient. When the
assessment doesnt work, its reliability is zero.
The content of the facial NMS is an accurate impression of the
conventionalized usage of the language in the community. The
assessment uses other signers than the instructor to introduce
students to variations of NMS expression. Therefore this assessment
has considerable authenticity.

In terms of wash back, the assessment has varied potential, mostly

in how it is administered. This assessment is designed for
instructors who have large numbers of students, and are not able to
provide comprehensive feedback in a practical manner.
Sophisticated LMS systems could allow students to review the clips
repeatedly after the assessment, and compare other answers. ScanTron approaches offer little washback, unless instructors review the
errors, which is time consuming. Grading handwritten answers is
the most time consuming process.
