TheSuezCrisis

TheSuezCrisiswasarelativelyshortconflict,thatdealtwithwhohadcontrolofthe
SuezCanalinEgypt.Thecanalopenedin1869,itwascreatedtoconnecttheredseatothe
mediterraneansea,andcreateeasieraccesstoportsinAsiaandAfrica.(Lutz,1999)Itwas
originallycoownedbyFrenchInvestorsandtheEgyptgovernment.HoweverEgyptlatersold
itsshareoftheSuezCanaltoGreatBritain.Britainwantedownershipofthecanalsothatit
couldsetupnavalbasesalongit.Theymainlydidthistodrivehomethefactthattheyhadthe
biggestnavalforceintheworld.
Thingsremainedcalminthisregionforthenextfewyears,theninthe1950segypts
governmentwasoverthrownandGamalNassertookoverastheleaderofthecountry.

country,sonotlongaftertakinghispositionasrulerofEgypthebeganhisplantogrow
Egypt.HebeganbycreatingasevenyeartreatywithBritain,thistreatystatedthatBritain
mustremovetheirnavyfromtheSuezCanalduringthistimeperiod.(Lutz,1999)Healsocut
offallIsraelishipmentthattriedtogothroughthecanal.Thissparkedaminorconflict
betweenIsraelandEgypt,BothGreatBritainandtheU.S.S.RsidedwithEgyptatthistime
andsoldthemweapontofightagainstIsraeliforces.
Americaalsowantedtoincreasetheirinfluenceinthisregion,becausetheU.S.S.R
was,andtheydidanythingtheycouldtooutdothem.SotheyweregoingtolendEgyptmoney
tobuildadamcalledtheAswandam.(Lutz,1999)Howevertheybackedoutofthis
agreementandEgyptneededtolookelsewheretogetthemoney,soEgyptdecidedtotake
overthecanalandusethemoneytheydmakefromthattobuildthedam.Theyweregiven
severaloffersascompensationtonotdothis,butEgyptdeclinedthemallandpreparedto
fightforthecanal.BritainbegantogathertheirarmytooinpreparationtoattackEgypt,they
askedAmericaforhelp,buttheywouldnotsupportthembecausetheyfeltitwas
unnecessaryfighting.(Lutz,1999)SobritainteamedupwithFranceandIsraelinstead,who
alsowantedtostopEgyptfromtakingovertheCanal.InOctoberof1956,Israelattacked
EgyptandBritainandFrancekepttheirforcesstationedontheCanalandreadytofight.
(Lutz,1999)HoweverBritainreliedonAmericatokeeptheireconomystableandAmerica
refusedtofundtheirefforts,sincetheywerestronglyagainsttheconflict.Thatontopofthe
facttheTheU.S.S.Rthreatenedtousenuclearweapononthem,Britainhadtobackoutof
thefightandFranceandIsraelshortlyfollowedthem.
Egyptwasabletotakecontrolofthecanalbuthadtopayreparationsforstartingthis
conflict.(britannica.com,2014)AmericathensetupforcesinEgypttomakesurenofurther
fightingoccurred.Becauseofthiswholeordeal,BritainandFrancebecameseenaslessofa
worldpower,EgyptandTheU.S.S.Rbecameseenasmoreofaworldpower,andAmerica
becameseenasapeacekeeper.
