Dover Castle

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in the town of the same name in the English
county of Kent. It was founded in the 12th century and has been described as the
"Key to England" due to its defensive significance throughout history. It is the
largest castle in England.
Built on a high cliff, in a strategic position facing threats from Europe, Dover
castle has always been an important part of Britain's line of defence.
The castle was seized by a small force of Parliamentarians during the Civil War in
1642. It remained in Cromwell's hands until the Restoration which ensured the
castle remained intact unlike most other castles in England.
In World War II the bastions were rebuilt to enable heavy guns to be mounted over
the harbour.
No other castle in Britain has such a long recorded history.
We can visit The Dover Castel to discover 2000 years of history and have an
amazing day out.
Here at The Dover Castel we can visit THE GREAT TOWER, the royal court of
King Henry II. We can experience the vibrant colour and opulence of one of
medieval England's most important castles as we're transported to a world of
courtly intrigue and royal ambition.
We also can travel deep into the white cliffs to explore the atmospheric
Underground Hospital. Converted into a hospital for injured troops in 1941,
visitors today can experience the sounds, smells and atmosphere of the World War
II hospital with its operating theatre.
