COUNCIL PRESIDENT

SHERRI S. LIGHTNER
CITY OF SAN DIEGO COUNCIL DISTRICT 1

Statement
For Immediate Release
December 15, 2014

Contact: Erin Demorest

SAN DIEGO --- San Diego City Councilmember Sherri Lightner today issued the following
statement:
There have been concerns raised about potential Brown Act violations among Councilmembers
who may have discussed the Council President vote in advance of the hearing last Wednesday.
In an abundance of caution, I am calling a special meeting for tomorrow, Tuesday, December
16 at 5:30 p.m. to request a revote on the selection of Council President for 2015. We will also
take up the appointments to Council Committees and the appointments to outside organizations
at this special meeting.
This is the cure provided by the Brown Act. This action will quickly and simply address any
concerns.
The City Attorneys Office has offered to hold a refresher training on the Brown Act for all
Councilmembers, and I look forward to working with their office to schedule that training for
January.
I want to set a tone right from the start of my tenure as Council President that I am strongly
committed to being open and transparent, and I will put a particular emphasis on making sure we
conduct Council meetings consistent with the Brown Acts goals of public access to all public
meetings and to the information on which all decisions are made.
