COMMUNITY PROFILE

The name Calaan was taken from the native word kalan. It is what natives use as a stove for cooking and
usually made of clay or stone. Sitio Calaan is situated at the heart of the three hills that surround the area. Due to
this topographical feature, the place was compared to the shape of a kalan.
Calaan is the farthest sitio of Barangay Bonawon. It is situated in the hinterland more or less about eighteen
kilometers away from the highway. It is located along the boundaries of Siaton and Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental. It
has a rough road and can be reached by walking.
The people of Calaan live a simple life. The locals chose to settle on this area due to its fertile soil and cool
climate totally ideal for growing crops. Farming and livestock production is their main source of livelihood. They also
hold gathering locally known as tabo wherein the locals gather in one place for business as well as pleasure.
The sitio is headed by a sitio president and its officials who run the needs of the locals. They function more like
barangay officials with the exception that their service is purely voluntary and without compensation.

The people in this place are religious. About 93% are Roman Catholic and the rest belong to other religious
groups.
One of the Major problems of the barrio people is no water supply. It was a problem a long time ago and until
now no solution has been made. The people have to hike almost half kilometer from their houses to the source in order
to get water needed for drinking, washing, cooking, bathing and others. They can only have enough water during rainy
days. The place looks very dry during summer.
Another problem on the place is no electricity. It is very hard to effect change because the place is very far from
modernization. No computer can be installed or other machineries run by electricity.
