Measurement
Essential Questions:
How do we correctly measure various items and lengths?
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units
including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express
measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a twocolumn table.
Learning Objectives and Assessments:
Objectives

Assessment

Students will be able to measure different items

to the nearest inch

Students will pick various items to measure and

will correct each others measurements and will
measure items chosen by the teacher

Materials:

Worksheet on measurements
Smart Board
Physical items for students to measure
Rulers
Reading material related to the topic

Prior Knowledge: Students have had lessons on measuring in third grade so will have some familiarity
with the topic
Lesson Beginning: The teacher will show longest measured world records
Instructional Plan:
1. The teacher will show students the different world records

2. The teacher will review the proper way to measure with a ruler (such as lining up the item along
the zero line not against end of ruler)
3. The teacher will explain measuring to the nearest inch
4. The students will go on a scavenger hunt around classroom to find five items that they would
like to measure
5. The teacher will allow 10 minutes for the students to measure their items and record them in
their math notebook
6. The students will think pair share with their shoulder buddies about which items they picked
and how long they were
7. The students will trade objects with their partner and measure their partners to see if they got
the same answers
8. The teacher will give students a worksheet on measurements for them to complete individually
9. The teacher will go over the answers when the students are complete
10. Students who finish early will do a math journal page while waiting for the rest of the students.
11. The teacher will go over the general questions listed below
Differentiation:
The teacher will have a larger ruler on the smart board identifying the inch and half inch marks
for students to reference when completing sheet. The teacher will have visual representation as well as
verbal to aid in different learning styles.
Questions:
General:

What is the proper way to measure with a ruler?

What do the different lines on a ruler represent?
How would we measure something longer than the ruler?
Besides length what are other areas we measure that dont include a ruler?

Classroom Management: The teachers will ensure that students are respectively listening and
completing the activities. Students will follow classroom rules during activity. If classroom gets too
rowdy the teachers will use the chime to gain their attention and bring them back. Students will raise
hands or use white boards when answering to ensure students are not calling out.
Transitions: The teacher will use the responsive classroom method of the chime to gain students
attention.
Closure: To close the lesson the teacher will ask the students the questions listed above. The teacher will
thank the students for their attentiveness and respect and tell them the lesson is complete.
