Endangered
any species that is in
danger of extinction
weather it is all or a
significant portion of its
range.

Threatened
any species that is likely
to become an endangered
species within the
foreseeable future.

Reasons animals become endangered or threatened:

1. Present or threatened destruction, modification, or
curtailment of its habitat or range;
2. Overutilization for commercial, recreational, scientific, or
educational purposes;
3. Disease or predation;
4. Inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms; and
5. Other natural or human-made factors affecting its
continued existence.

Congress passed the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973,

The purpose of the ESA is to protect and recover imperiled
species and the ecosystems upon which they depend. It is
administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the
Commerce Departments National Marine Fisheries Service
(NMFS).
Under the ESA, species may be listed as either endangered or
threatened
All species of plants and animals,
except pest insects, are eligible
for listing as endangered or
