    Diego.WhenImetupwithMrs.Jackie,shetookmearoundthebaseforaquickhistorytour.Ifound
    outthat15yearsagoMiramarBasewasoriginallyaU.S.Navybase.Afterthetourshetookmetoher
    squadron'sbuilding,theWhiteKnights,whereImetafewMarines,includingSgt.MajorSean
    Greenleaf.
    Sgt.MajorGreenleafwas18yearsoldwhenhejoinedtheMarineCorps.Heexplainedtome
    thattheMarinesareafamilytraditionforgenerations,andwasacallingforhimduringhisyouth
    asGreenleafsawtheMarinesasheroes.HetoldmethathebecameaMarinebecause,Ilookedupto
    myfatherheismyherosoIwantedtobejustlikethat.WhenaskedwhatdefinesaMarine,hesaid
    itwastheirabilitytomovetowardsthesoundofgunfire."DifferentpartsoftheMarineCorpsare
    definedbydifferentthings."
    WhenonejoinstheMarineCorps,onetakesontheCorpsstandardsofHonor,Courage,and
    Commitment.Fromthere,youtakeyourownpathofbecomingaMarine.EveryonejoinstheMarine
    Corpsfordifferentreasons,butintheend,theyallhavethesameideaofwhattheywanttodoasa
    Marine:Toprotectandservetheircountryandtokeepitfree.
    AfterinterviewingMajorGreenleaf,Mrs.Jackietookmearoundthebuildingonanothertour.
    SheshowedmetheBoardRoomandtoldmethatthatwaswheretheCommandTeamorthe
    DepartmentTeamcametodiscussimportantdecisions.WhenIlookedinthewindowoftheroom,you
    couldseetheprison.Itwasamazing.Mrs.Jackieexplainedtomethattheprisonwasinthemiddleof
    thebasesothatifanyoftherogueMarinestriedtoescape,therewouldbetheMarineCorpsstanding
    intheirway.
    WhenMrs.Jackiefinishedexplainingtomeabouttheprison,wemetSgt.AndreneCastillio
    andGySgt.ChristopherNix.IaskedthemwhytheyjoinedtheMarinesGySgt.Nixsaidthathegrew
    upinasmalltownwhereeveryonekneweveryone."Therewasnothingthereforme!"
    ForSgt.Castilliothough,itwasdifferent.ShewasbornandraisedinJamaica,butwhenshe
    movedtotheU.S.shehadtroublewithimmigrationpapers.Oneday,herfriendwantedtojointhe
    MarineCorps,soshetaggedalongforsupport.Atthetimeshedidn'tknowmuchabouttheMarines,
    butwhenshesawauniform,shethought,"Wow,thatuniformiscool.Andyougetasword,too?"She
    joinedtheMarinesbecauseitgavehertheopportunitytotravelaroundtheworldandattendschool,but
    themainreasonshejoinedwasbecauseoftheuniform.SoforU.S.MarineCorps,whatmotivatesyou
    tojoinisonlyimportanttothemifyouacceptwhatyouhavetodoasaMarine.
    IfyouacceptthedutiesofbeingapartoftheMarineCorps,itdoesntmatterwhatyourinitial
    motivetojoinwas.ThemostcommonmotiveIhearistheneedtogetoutoftheirsmalltownonce
    thereisnothingthereforthemtofeelliketheyreliving.Itamazesmehowmanypeoplejointhe
    MarineCorpsfordifferentreasonshowever,theyallfeelthesamewayonetheyareapartofthe
    Marines,andliveuptothesamestandardsofHonor,Courage,andCommitment.
