LIFE Groups Discussion Guide

I Am A Church Member Book Discussion

Sunday, October 5 : Intro & Chapter 1
For the next 3 weeks of LIFE Groups we will discuss the short
book, I Am a Church Member. We will need to read
approximately 2 chapters each week, then discuss the chapters at
group.
1. Tell the group about a club or an organization (non-church or
religious) you have participated in. What made you decide to
join? What were the benefits of membership? What was
required of members?
2. While you may know each other, you may not know each
others church history. If you are willing, tell the group about
your personal church history of your various church
experiences as an adult. Keep it brief!
3. In Chapter 1, the author tells about his experience as a boy
with the local country club. What do you think of his
comparison of church membership with country club
membership? Can you think of other ways that country club
membership is different from church membership?

Bible Study
4. The author uses the teachings of 1 Corinthians 12-14 to
illustrate healthy church membership. Read 1 Corinthians
12:12-31. What do you think is your part of the body?

5. Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. Where or how have you seen

love like this shown in the life of the church?
6. If you were to grow in love in one of the ways listed by Paul in
this chapter, which one would make you a better church
member? Why?
7. The challenge in this first chapter is to be a loving, functioning
church member. The need for this is created by so many
people who are card-carrying members of a church but who
rarely participate, serve, give, etc. When are you the most
tempted to pull away from fellowship or active participation in
the church? How can you guard your heart against that
temptation?
8. Conclude by reading through the pledge of page 18. Ask
group members to consider whether they are willing to make
this pledge. (You can decide if you want to have them answer
that out loud or just to themselves, or in prayer).

Concluding Prayer Time: Take a few minutes for prayer

requests and conclude the group time with prayer.
