Scientific inquiry refers to the different ways scientists study the natural
world, and it is the ongoing process of discovery in science. There is a process in
scientific inquiry that includes posing questions, developing hypotheses, designing
experiments, collecting and interpreting data, drawing conclusions, and
communicating ideas and results. The first step, posing questions, is a question
asked that could be answered by making observations. The second step is
developing hypotheses. A hypothesis is a possible answer to a scientific question or
explanation for a set of observations. A developing hypothesis is hypothesis that
takes time to be accepted as true. The next step in scientific inquiry is designing
experiments. By designing experiments you can test a prediction. There are many
steps in order to design an experiment. Collecting and interpreting data is a way for
scientists to create a data table for recording their data in the beginning of an
experiment. A data table provides an organized way to collect and record
observations so it is essential when doing an experiment. The second to last step is
drawing conclusions. After scientists interpret data, they draw a conclusion
explaining their hypothesis. The final step is communicating, which is sharing ideas
and conclusions with others through writing and speaking. This is important
because scientists can share the design of an experiment and other scientists can
experiment it to check the results.
Designing an Experiment is a long process, and it is important to pay close
attention to the necessities needed to succeed. A very important step in designing an
experiment is to examine all the parameters. A parameter is a factor that can be
measured in an experiment, and variable parameters are the ones that change
during an experiment. It is important to know that there are two types of variables,
the manipulated variable that changes and the responding variable that is
measured. It is also important to keep all the other parameters controlled, or kept
constant. It is good to investigate when only one parameter is manipulated at a time,
which makes it a controlled experiment.
