(Please check appropriate semester)

Professional Semester III is a five-course equivalent integrated semester including half-time teaching and
professional study in curriculum design, leadership, advanced methods, and reflective practice. Intern Teachers are
assigned full time to schools for the semester during which they assume responsibility for approximately one-half of
the teaching day. PS III professional study is designed to complement and enhance the internship. The professional
study components may occur on or off-campus and are coordinated by the Faculty Mentors in collaboration with
Intern Teachers and school personnel.

Intern Teachers Descriptive Report:

This PSIII internship provided me with many learning opportunities and was an overall
great experience. I found myself in a welcoming environment from all staff from the first
day. Every teacher that I asked for help from was more than willing to provide it. It was
clear that I would be treated as a regular teacher/intern, rather than a practicum student.
I was given a great opportunity to teach in my major with 5 different physical education
classes under my mentor Curt Moll. As well I was given the opportunity to teach a grade
7 science class with Tammy Rozdeba. It was nice to get a glimpse of the classroom
side of things. This class was a modified group so it was a good challenge to get the
students to have a good understand of the information. I covered the units on
interactions and ecosystems and plants for food and fiber. To try to get the most
understanding out of the students I tried using multiple strategies. The two main
strategies were direct instruction mixed with cooperative learning. Cooperative learning
was what seemed to work the best for the students so I used it as much as possible.
One thing I found interesting about this experience was the large degree of variance
between my PE classes. I had one class of grade 7 students who were ready and willing
to try almost any activity, had high participation and gave great effort. This class was a

lot of fun to teach. I shared the gym with another grade 7 class at this time so the other
teacher and I decided to combine the classes together. While we were outside in
September and October all the students played together. We did soccer, ultimate
Frisbee, and rugby. Once we moved inside in November, the other teacher took a group
of students to the fitness room while I taught a basketball unit. This was to cut down on
numbers as we had 50 students in the two classes combined. Every week the group
that went to the fitness room was switched. The students seemed to enjoy having both
the experiences in the fitness room with the functional fitness as well as getting to play
sports in the gym.
I had a grade 7 team sports option that I decided to try something I had never done
before. Each unit I would pick students who wanted to be captains, every student would
eventually need to be a captain. The captains would evaluate the students in the class
based on their own rating system they chose. I gave them the idea of rating out of 10 or
giving a letter grade, but they could rate however the wanted. After an evaluation day
where the students performed activities pertaining to the sport, we had a draft day.
During the draft students had to pick their teams based on the ratings they made from
the previous class. The draft occurred at lunch in a closed room so no student was
aware of when they were picked. Captains were sworn to secrecy about which student
was picked where. Once draft day was over, the next class would consist of the teams
running through drills, made up by their captain. They had most of the class to practice
and then we would have a scrimmage game at the end of the day. The next 3-4 classes
would be a tournament to see who got to pick the next sport. The winning team from the
tournament voted as a team as to which sport they wanted to play next, off a premade
list. It was a really fun project for me to come up with and was a lot of fun to implement.
My grade 8 classes were fun as well, they were not quite as self-motivated as the 7s,
but I was still able to try new activities and drills with little negativity from the students. I
only had the one class once a week so we played a lot of different games. I took them
through some tag/cooperation games, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, ultimate
Frisbee, handball and dodge ball. I had a lot of fun with this class. My other grade 8
class was a modified class and it posed a whole new challenge. They were a wellbehaved class, always paying attention, but some skills were harder to teach. I had to
modify a lot of my drills to be simpler so that they could understand and complete the
tasks. It was a very interesting time with this class and it made my experience that much
more full.
Probably the most important experience of this internship would have to be teaching my
grade 9 class. This had to be the most difficult class I have ever experienced. I was
warned by my mentor at the start of the internship that this group was not the easiest to
teach. That is why he wanted me to teach it, if I could handle them I could handle almost
any class. The class was full of some lethargic students who aspired to nothing. There
was one student who really exemplified this. I tried extremely hard to get this student to

PS III Final Report for Wyatt Koch

Teacher Mentor Comments:

It has my pleasure to work with Wyatt Koch at St. Marys School. His four month
internship was beneficial not only to Wyatt, but to myself, to two other teachers he team
taught with, and to his students. And despite the physical education schedule being a bit
goofy this year odd class combinations and having to share the gym with another
teacher Wyatt took it all in stride and made it work.
Wyatt team taught Physical Education 7 with our vice-principal, Mike Weisgerber 25+
years of experience and ended up being the lead teacher for the most part. He met
with Mr. Weisgerber on numerous occasions to discuss unit plans, warm up activities,
and modifications to units/lesson that both suggested wouldnt work. Mr. Weisgerber
came to rely on Wyatt for new ways to try old warm ups, games, and activities, and
Wyatt benefited from the years of experience Mr. Weisgerber provided. Wyatt was very
comfortable in the gymnasium and set high expectations for behavior and dress from
day one. His calm demeanor, but high expectations, was met with respect and
compliance by the students. Students were excited to come to his classes and were
willing to try anything Wyatt threw at them. Wyatt was also quick to change things up on
the fly if he felt something wasnt working.
Wyatt also team taught Adapted Science 8 and Adapted Physical Education 8 & 9 with
Tammy Rozdeba 20+ years experience. It was a perfect team as Wyatt helped Mrs.
Rozdeba with using technology in science, while Mrs. Rozdeba schooled Wyatt on
running a successful adapted program, her specialty. Both teachers ended up learning a
great deal from each other. Science was not an area Wyatt was totally comfortable with
at first, but with Mrs. Rozdebas assistance, Wyatt seemed very comfortable with the
various needs that the adapted science class required him to meet. Wyatt also benefited
from Mrs. Rozdebas experience when it came to teaching Adapted Physical Education,
while Wyatts Physical Education knowledge assisted her in creating a fun learning
environment in the gymnasium. The Adapted Physical Education class was not an easy
class to teach as students range from very motivated and high energy, to very
unmotivated and low energy. Wyatt was able to find activities that both groups wanted
to participate in.
Wyatt was a member of a division wide professional learning community. He signed up
with a group of non-physical education majors to share ideas and methods in teaching
elementary school physical education. Wyatts wealth of knowledge and ability to modify
junior high and high school games and activities into elementary level activities wqs
appreciated by all members.
Wyatt co-coached our girls C volleyball team. The other coach, Brock Hale is a first
year teacher. Both Wyatt and Mr. Hale complimented each other with their knowledge
and patience with a group of girls who, for most of them, was the first time theyve
