Sophocles The Mighty!

Oedipus the King is one of three vigorous plays about Oedipus that Sophocles wrote.
No one is too sure when he was born but many believe he was born somewhere around 490 B.C

Almost as old
as this
outdated
play!

Coming to you from the ancient city of

Thebes

Long ago there was a prophecy

that started that I, Oedipus,
would someday kill my father as
well as marry my mother. Yes, you
heard that right. Hearing this
prophecy, your grand father King
Laius decided to abandon me.
Growing up without knowing the
truth about who I really was I
found myself investigating the
murder of King Laius. Whilst
searching for answers to this I
accidentally killed him, again
unaware of who I am or what
was to come

Yea, yea I get it kids. Ill

just go ahead and skip to the
end..
A terrible plague came over the
city of Thebes, which was
brought upon by a Sphinx. A
Sphinx with a riddle, a riddle
that I solved. Thus after
solving the riddle and freeing
Thebes of its horrific plague, I
was awarded the queen of
Thebes to be my wife, Jocasta,
yup thats right. Your
mother.. And I guess mine.

Time for my Judgment!

Critic reviewI get it I really do, way back in well 500 B.C there wasnt much to do. Like seriously for
most of us in society now, we cant go a single day without watching TV, getting on the
computer, talking on the phone I mean yet alone no electricity! I really do get it
But come on Sophocles! Seriously no matter what time you are from killing your own
father only to marry his wife who happens to be your mother! Disgusting! But no you
didnt stop there did ya? You then had to have him gouge his own eyes out!

Judgment!
But seriously being the psychology nut that I am I enjoyed this play. Sigmund
Freud, a famous psychologist, has a theory that children of either sex will develop
physical feelings for the parent of the opposite sex. Thus steering them to want to
act identical to the same sex parent.
Interesting enough I happened to read this play right around the time I was
following the Sigmund Freud chapter of my psychology book. So my personal
perspective had changed drastically considering even way back 500 B.C Freud had
proof.
I recommend this play to anyone interested in Freud's theories that might enjoy a
historical view on it
Or even anyone who wants to explore the dark twisted sexuality involved with this
play.
I dont Judge. (get it? Slides called Judgment)
