Students in the Seminar in Health Promotion class and I planned, organized, and ran a non profit 5k held
in Platteville, Wisconsin. This was the 7th annual time this event has been run, but when our group took
over we made some major changes to the route, promotion, and theme that increased the attendance,
spread the word about a great nonprofit organization, and raised funds for a charitable organization.

UW-Platteville Health and Human Performance Standard Alignment

Advocacy was met during this experience. Advocacy is defined as the health promoter understands,
responds to, and interacts with the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context that
affects health promotions.
In this case we advocated physical and mental health to the local community through the use of an
annual 5k event.

We demonstrated competency in the health and human performance standard of advocacy by

working as a team with each other to create a timeline of responsibilities for each member, a budget for
the event, and to hold each other accountable to accomplish each task in a timely manner.
SD4.d. Contributes to the Community- The candidate is able to assume a leadership role among
colleagues and is supportive and cooperative with peers and volunteers, and serves as a participant and
leader in the community. Our group exemplified this standard because we raised $462.48 for Family
Advocates while also advocating healthy physical and mental lifestyle choices to the community.

What I learned:

As a result of this activity, I learned that it is very important to create relationships within the field in
order to pull all resources available together to create the best environment possible for
clients/students to learn. Also, I learned that events that draw big groups of people together are great
opportunities to spread the word about being healthy mentally and physically.

What I learned about myself:

I learned that as a prospective health promotion specialist that advocacy is sometimes needed to reach
out to members of the community that sometimes might not have the initiative to find information on
their own. Also, I learned that I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when the event comes together
and people enjoy what you have created.
