Students in the Seminar in Health Promotion class and I planned, organized, and ran a nutrition seminar
in Cuba City for anyone in the local community to participate in. We also used movement bands to track
their activity level over eight weeks.

UW-Platteville Health and Human Performance Standard Alignment

Communication was met during this experience. Communication is defined as the health promoter
uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active
inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction.
In this case we advocated physical and mental health to the local community through the use of an
annual 5k event.

We demonstrated competence in the health and human performance standard of communication by

working as a team with each other to create a timeline of responsibilities for each member, a budget for
the seminar, and to hold each other accountable to accomplish each task in a timely manner. Each
group presented for two one hour classes on each Wednesday following the 28th of March. My group
was first and we presented on label reading. We utilized PowerPoint media, handouts, verbal lecture,
formal and informal assessments, and nonverbal cues to communicate to the class. We were able to
communicate in a way that multiple types of learning personalities could understand and gain
knowledge from this experience.
KSD4.e Grows and Develops Professionally- The candidate is aware of opportunities for professional
development to improve content knowledge and pedagogical skill and can take an active role in assisting
other educators. I exemplified this standard because I was able to gain knowledge through the
opportunity of teaching educators in Cuba City, Wisconsin about nutrition. This knowledge ranged
everywhere from understanding a different age group of clients to researching nutrition facts for
questions brought up in class.

What I learned:

As a result of this activity, I learned that it is very important to communicate clearly and effectively to
the class. Also, I learned that it is important to communicate in diverse ways to help reach those
students that may learn differently.

What I learned about myself:

I learned that as a prospective health promotion specialist that communication is sometimes needed to
reach out to members of the community that sometimes might not have the initiative to find
information on their own. Also, I learned that when I study and understand my material and practice
my presentation, it becomes much easier to communicate with the class in a more effective manner.
