Transfer Data during LWD and MWD. can we use optical fibers in this process?

The increasing of world oil demanding requires increase of the production, so logging
while drilling cut the time of logging using wire line.
The problem is how to transfer the data from the logging tool fast and in real time.
Current methods:
- The most common method is using the mud pulse system in which a tool which made
pulses in the mud which are measured using sensors on the rig these pulses indicates a
binary code that represent the data the code is analyzed using computers to acquire the
information in decimals, the disadvantages of this method is the small rate of data which
is 40bit/sec, can't be used while using air or foam as drilling fluid, less effective in under
balance situations .
- Another method is using electromagnetic system, in this system a tool is used to
transmit low frequency electromagnetic waves which are received on the surface.
- The is a recent method but it hasn't been used yet, which is using wireless technology
by fixing antennas through the drill pipe it offers a high speed telemetry and two ways
communications.
- The most recent method is a special wired drill pipe which transmit the data directly at
a rate of 1 megabit/ second.
The optical fiber:
- So can we use a special drill pipe uses optical fibers instead of the wires, in these pipes
there would be a tool which connect optical fibers together, this method would allow 2way communicating with high speed rate. It will not be affected by any radiation in the
subsurface. It can be used in all well types.
