Alchemy of Paint
The purpose of this Transition Metal Pigment
Lab is to be able to retrieve pigments from
Transition Metals and be able to paint with
them.

Lab Vocabulary
PIGMENT a natural coloring matter
TRANSITION METAL elements classified as metals with partially filled d-subshells
IONIC COMPOUND a compound made of an anion and a cation
IONS an atom with an electrical charge

Pigments
Pigments are used to give things their color. Pigments give
color to inks, clothing, food and paints. Pigments that were
obtained in this lab were extracted from transition metals.
Each transition metal compound gives off a different color.
Malachite- Copper compound
Cobalt yellow- Cobalt compound
Cobalt green- Cobalt and zinc compound

Pigment Creation
All groups first measured out each of the compounds, we either added water or
acid. This was for each of the colors separately. We made three different
colors. In order to get the pigments out of each compound we had to filter it out
and dry it. The dry stuff left in the filter paper was the pigment. After we got out
pigments, we had to get our binder to make the paint. We used pure egg yolk
for that. We broke the egg, separated the whites, broke the egg to eventually
get the yellow. Once we got the pure egg yellow, we poured it in, with equal
amount of water, and mixed. Tah Dahh! Paint from scratch!!
