Please provide a brief of the project Sardar Sarovar Project

The Sardar Sarovar Project is one of the largest water resources project of India covering four major states Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Dam's capacity would be third highest in the world. This is also World's Second Largest Concrete Gravity Dam (by
volume).
It has an installed capacity of 1,450 MW, a source of cheap and eco-friendly hydro-power.

What were main objective of this dam?


The dam was built with a vision to harnessing the river for irrigation and power generation in the Narmada basin.
This dam was designed with additional objective to improve overall quality of life of affected states though
irrigation, drinking water supply, power generation, and flood protection.

What are benefits of Narmada Dam?


Few of the primary benefits are
Irrigation
The Project provides irrigation facilities to about 3100 villages of Gujarat. It also irrigates land in the strategic
desert of Rajasthan and tribal hilly tract of Maharashtra. Assured water supply made these area drought proof.
Drinking water supply
The project provides drinking water to 130 Cities and 10,000 villages. Water supply requirement of several
industries will also be met from the project giving a boost to all-round production
Power
The power is shared by three states - Madhya Pradesh - 57%, Maharashtra - 27% and Gujarat 16%.
A series of micro hydel power stations are also planned on the branch canals where convenient falls are available.
Flood Protection
It also provides flood protection to 210 villages in Gujarat.
Employment
It also provides employment to about 4600 citizens.
