INTRODUCTION TO MATERIAL HANDLING

The book, Introduction to material handling draws a balance between the two extremes. referring to both
management of materials handling system. as well as wide range of material handling equipment with their
use, selection criteria and operational details. the author Siddhartha Ray is director-in-charge of national
institute of Technical Teachers Training and research.
the book is divided into twelve chapters, the first chapter introduction to material handling system deals with
basic concepts associated with material handling , types of material which is handled. second chapter gives
prescribed set of rules or principles of material handling which are planning, system, material flow,
simplification, gravity ,space utilization, unit size, safety , mechanization/automation, equipment selection,
standardization, flexibility, dead weight, motion , idle time, maintenance, obsolescence, control, capacity
performance and a detailed description of each. third chapter gives a principle of unitizing. its advantages and
disadvantages, handling methods. chapter four is introduction of various material handling systems used and
their classifications. chapter five to ten discuss each of the material handling systems in detail which are
industrial trucks, conveyors, pneumatic and hydraulic conveyors, hoisting equipments , bulk handling
equipments and systems, robotic handling , their classifications, and their detailed design principles. chapter
eleven is about various auxiliary equipments which aid in material handling process. chapter twelve is
basically related to organization , safety and maintenance and principles involved of each. for efficient material
flow in facility.
the book presents the set of material handling principles which must be followed while designing the current
warehouse facility. also the initial study of various material handling equipments could be done from this book
with minor validation. the book also gives information about various distributors and suppliers throughout the
country.
