Heat Convection

Tutorial 3
(Radiation)
1. Define:
a) Emissive power
b) Emissivity
c) Blackbody
2. Consider a 20cm X 20cm X 20 cm cubical body at 1000K suspended in the
air. Assuming the body closely approximates a blackbody, determine:(2118)
a) The radiation rate emits by the cube, in W

(1.36 x 104W)

b) The spectral black body emissive power at a wavelength of 4m

(10.3kW/m2. m)
3. The total incident radiant energy upon a body which partially reflects,
absorbs and transmits radiant energy is 2200 Wm -2. Of this amount, 450
Wm-2 is reflected and 900 Wm-2 is absorbed by the body. Find the
transmissivity,.

4. A 100 W electric bulb has a filament temperature of 3001C. Assuming the

filament to be black, calculate the diameter of the wire if the length is 250
mm.

5. Two infinite black plates at 800C and 300C exchange heat by radiation.
Calculate the heat transfer per unit area.

6. A space satellite in the shape of a sphere with a diameter of 10 m is
traveling in outer space, where its surface temperature is held at 283.2 K.
The sphere sees only outer space, which can be considered as a black

7. Two very large parallel plates are maintained at uniform temperatures of
T1 = 600 K and T2 = 400 K and have emissivity 1 = 0.5 and 2 = 0.9
respectively. Determine the net rate of radiation heat transfer between the
two surfaces per unit area of the plates. (22-26)

8. Two very large concentric cylinders of diameters D1 = 0.2 m and D2 = 0.5
m are maintained at uniform temperatures of T 1 = 950 K and T2 = 500 K
and have emissivity 1 = 1 and 2 = 0.7, respectively. Determine the net rate
of radiation heat transfer between two cylinders per unit length of the
cylinders.(22-30)

9. A long cylindrical rod with diameter D 1 = 0.01 m is placed in evacuated
long cylindrical enclosure of diameter D 2 = 0.1 m and emissivity 2 = 0.95,
which is maintained at a temperature of 200 K. The rod is heated by
passing electric current through it. When steady operating condition is
reached, it is observed that the rod dissipating electric power at a rate of 8
W per unit of its length and its surface temperature is 500 K. Determine
