Learning Design for: Pytagora' Theorem

Editor: Giulio Prevedello

Context
Topic: Mathematics
Total learning time: 90
Number of students: 20
Description: This lesson starts with an introduction of the Pythagorean Theorem and the It
introduces vocabulary, formulas and concepts related to right triangles and the use of the
Pythagorean Theorem in the real world. Students will learn the basics through real world
application.

Aims
Know and understand the Pythagorean theorem and use it to find the length of the missing
side of a right triangle and the lengths of other line segments and, in some situations,
empirically verify the Pythagorean theorem by direct measurement.

Outcomes
Application: Discover how the Pythagorean Theorem describes the relationship between
the lengths of the sides of a right triangle.
Understand visual and algebraic proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing lengths and to
calculate distances between points on the coordinate plane.

Teacher will display several photos or drawings of where a right triangle is formed
through certain situations.
Teacher will ask students to look and identify a shape or figure formed between three
different points, on the foto.

Students will be given a ruler, corkboard
square, three push pins and a 12 inch string. They
will be asked to brainstorm and create a right
triangle using all of their resources.

Teacher will circulate around the room as students work independently and in pairs.
Teacher will question individual students on specific aspects of the lesson during each
phase of the lesson.
If the majority of the students do understand the concepts taught, the lesson will move
forward.

Use the virtual manipulative to help students:

1. Make a new triangle by dragging the point on the triangle's legs.
2. Notice that the sides a, b, and c always have the relationship.....
3. In the Show Proof mode, drag the pieces from the blue and green
