APOSTASY AMONGST SIKHS

Harbans Singh, M.A., Chandigarh Ph. : 0172-4621344
Apostasy in regard to cutting
and trimming of hair, use of tobacco
and intoxicants amongst the Sikhs
is fast spreading. Rich families, the
peasants and the poor are worstly
effected. Wearing of caps by young
and even old Sikhs against all
canons and tenets of Sikhism is a
common sight. The stern stricture
that any Sikh who supports a cap
is like a leper doomed forever Jo
Sikh hoye sir topi dhare, Janam
janam kushti hoye mare is being
ignored.
During Bhai Vir Singhs time
(1872-1957) a Sikh Youth settled
abroad, sheared his hair and sent
his photograph bearing a solar hat
to his parents with a justification
that one should change according
to the necessity of life and
circumstances. The parents who
were greatly perturbed approached
Bhai Sahib for help. Bhai Sahib was
known to have brought the famous
intellectual Prof. Puran Singh back
to Sikhism from Budhism. The letter
which Bhai Sahib wrote is given
below :
Respected Sardar Sahib,
We are greatly surprised and
disturbed to read your letter. Bowing
against ones faith and form is the
result of slavish mentality which
had been caused by our continuous
Subjugation under the foreign rules.
Guru Nanak embarked to take his
weakness out of us. With utmost
regards for the wishes of his
respected parents and elders to
remain at home to look after them
and his young family, he preferred
to go out on his hazardous mission
of world emancipation. He did not
bow before Kaaba but demonstrated
the omnipresence of God in all
directions. Guru Angad boldly faced

Emperor Hamayuns drawn sword

and reminded him of his
cowardliness in front of Sher Shah
Suri. Guru Amar das did not agree
to comply with Emperor Akbars
instruction to preach Hindu mode
of worship. Guru Arjan Sahib did
not include Prophet Mohammeds
praise in Sri Guru Granth Sahib but
faced death and severe tortures
inflicted on him by Emperor
Jahangir. Guru Hargobind refused
to part with Emperor Shahjahans
falcon which fell into the hands of
his Sikhs, but fought a battle at
Amritsar, which he won to exert the
rule of game. Guru Gobind Singh
created the Khalsa and taught them
to stand on their ideals, to fight
injustice and oppression and
never to give in. He blessed his
Khalsa with a dominating
personality and strong character
which does not bow to any
physical, mental or moral
weakness.
Bhai Taru Singh had asked his
executioner to remove his scalp
(Khopri) along with hair rather cut
his hair. Bhai Mani Singh has his
limbs cut to pieces than to cut his
hair. The other martyrs like Bhai
Subeg Singh did not abjure their
faith.
The British ruled India for three
centuries, but they never wore
Indian dress. We the Indians due
to slavish mentality started wearing
Pathans dress during their rule
and aped European clothes during
the British regime.
Our Guru taught us to remain
firm to our convictions and resolve.
The spirit of independence which
they inculcated, which helped the
Sikhs to establish an empire in the
Northern India which unfortunately

44

was lost due to treachery.

Hair is our Uniform, our
identity and symbol of devotion
and dedication for our Gurus. Hair
with a turban bestows Sardari
Guru Gobind Singh had made the
Sikhs relationship with the Gurus.
Please grow your hair and come to
meet us in your original form to
gladden our hearts.
On receiving this letter, the
Sardar relented and returned to his
original form and faith.
There are numerous incidents
in the Sikh history where a lone or
a few determined and inspired Sikh
stood their ground against heavy
odds justifying Guru Gobind Singh
fiat Sava lakh se ek Laraoon, tabe
Gobind Singh naam Kahaoon. If I,
Guru Gobind Singh deserve my
name, my one Sikh will contest
against hundred and twenty five
thousands.
Bhai Bachittar Singh alone drove
away an intoxicated elephant at
Anandpur Sahib; cook Kirpal Chand
battled with Raja Bhim Chand, a
known warrior and killed him with
his cooking spoon (Karchha) and
Bhai Bota Singh dared to collect
passenger tax amongst the enemy
lines thereby claiming suzerainty
of Khalsa.
A Sikh is not complete without
his turban which he supports all
the time. Out of the four taboos
prescribed for a Sikh, cutting or
trimming of hair is the strictest
stigma.
The bearing and dress of a Sikh
is so significant that Guru Gobind
Singh says that his follower has his
special appearance Khalsa mero
roop hai khas. Of the special
status conferred, the Sikh humbly
submits Tun Sahib haun sangi

B@AD

tera - Oh Lord I am only your

imitation. The Nihangs, a Sikh
warrior sect, till today wear the
same dress and accouterments as
worn by Guru Gobind Singh and
his army and they are known as
Guru de Ladle Sikhbeloved Sikh
of the Guru. A Sikh is that who
respects and acts on the Gurus
commands and beliefs Sikhi Sikhya
gur vichar.
Prof. Puran Singh in his book,
Spirit of Sikh Part-II, page 56
writes - The Gurus commandment
in asking the disciples to preserve
their hair unshorn has in it an
abiding depth of truth, giving men
some deeper concerns of the soul,
for thereby he was precluded men
and women living only for the futile
foppishness of sartorial arts or the
barber made civilization. The hair
seems redundant to the modern
man, but to Guru Gobind Singh,
the hair was essential....for bringing
on of a greater moral and religious
civilization. He further writes that
if the Sikhs are left free to cut or
share the hair, how foolish it would
be to preach a religion and to
demand
whole
herds
on
compromise principles......Taking
away the Sikhs hair is to cut him
off from his intensely reactive
inspiration and source of strength.
In his book The Spirit Born
People, Page 38 Prof. Puran Singh
further says that wearing of the the
Masters knot of sacred tresses
is : a token of spiritual isolation
from the herd. So did Guru Gobind
Singh command. An obedience to
him is life. There is no life outside
that Great Love.
The numerous martyrs whose
deeds are narrated in the daily
Sikh Ardas lived true to their
tenets of faith of retaining unshorn
hair till their last breath of life.
Dharam nahin haria, Sikhi kesan
swasan naal Nibhayi. The foremost

request of a Sikh is for the grant

of Sikhist and hair Sikhan nu
Sikhi dan, Kes dan.
A highly placed Sikh officer who
had shaved off his hair was walking
in a crowded street. A tongawala
in his rear shouted - Oh Lala, get
aside. The officer looked around
and repented that had he been a
Sikh wearing his turban, the
tongawala would have addressed
him as Sardar ji, please get on one
side. He soon returned to his
original and natural form after this
bitter experience.
The curse affecting the Sikhs
today is also the use of
intoxicants, drugs and tobacco
which are strictly forbidden.
The main cause of apostasy is
lack of religious education and
lack of parents, teachers and
preachers influence who
themselves are ignorant of Sikh
history, Sikh character, tradition
and ethos. They do not observe
Rehat Maryada and set bad
examples to children and all those
who came in contact with them.
The Sikhs are required to conduct
themselves under the guidelines of
Gurbani. We have embroiled
ourselves in the futile rites, rituals
and ceremonies instead of
understanding it. The second main
cause is the spread of materialism
largely brought in by the western
culture. The slavish mentality to
please our bosses and rulers has
again manifested itself.
In the absence of devoted and
saintly person, like Sant Attar
Singh Ji of Mustuana who by his
life style, precepts and preaching
brought back or converted
thousands of people into Sikhism.
Money is needed to undertake the
gigantic
missionary
task.
Fortunately there is not dearth of
funds which are being Chandigarh
city alone, raising of colossal

45

buildings, sarovars, marbling and

gold plating. The other wasteful
expenses are the ostentatious and
elaborate functions such as kirtan
durbars and langars in big cities.
There is considerable scope for
effecting saving and channelizing
the amount so saved towards
opening of schools, colleges,
hospitals, home for invalids and
old people or even adopting the
existing establishments.
The S.G.P.C. which came into
existence in 1920 was primarily
meant for care and maintenance
of gurdwaras and for Dharam
Perchar has not been ver y
effective. It is not attracting devoted
and dedicates persons as its
members are elected, as in political
system, by votes thus bringing in
factionalism, nepotism and
corruption. This is true of all other
gurdwaras as well. The frequent infights and lack of character
displayed by the governing
members casts, bad reflection. A
reform is needed in the selection of
staff and management of religious
bodies so that these radiate the
true spirit of Sikhism.
Sikhism rooted in strong
traditions and sacrifies cannot be
washed away by waves of apostasy.
It is normal uninspired and faithless
to drop off from the true and devoted
path Jhar Jhar Pawade Kachche
Birhi Jina kar na aei whereas
devotees soaked in love of Guru
will never turn their back even at
the risk of death Rate seyee je
mukh na morann jina sianta sain.
A wave of apostasy was also
witnessed after the collapse of the
Sikh empire in 1850 when its
population dwindled to ten million
from eighty million. The Singh Sabha
Movement and the emergence of
saintly persons like Sant Attar
Singh Ji and Bhai Vir Singh and
intellectuals like Bhai Dit Singh

B@AD

and Kahn Singh Nabha retrieved.

The situation by propagations
(Parchar) and production to wrench
control of gurdwaras from the
corrupt and Government backed
mahants further consolidated the
position.
A vigorous drive is again needed
to stem the present tide of apostasy;
In this regard following suggestions
are offered:
a) Anyone who calls himself a
Sikh should mould his life according
to the tenets of Gurbani and abide
by the Rehat Maryada particularly
keeping of long hairs, the outward
appearance of a Sikh.
b) A concerted campaign or
mass movements at all levels by
the gurdwaras, Sikh institutions,
colleges and schools to organize
youth and elders camps to impart
religious instruction along with
sewa activities.
c) Training
institutions
(gurmat colleges) on pattern of
Christian Missionaries should be

setup for the training of preachers.

d) The S.G.P.C. should set up
a cell to prepare literature for mass
distribution free of cost. The stress
should be on gurbani, history, belief,
tradition, martyrs, theology and civil
sense. Gurdwaras should in addition
to have reference libraries.
e) The bulk of the Sikh population
is concentrated in villages where
our main thrust of missionary
activity should be directed. During
the lean periods of farming and on
occasions of important fair, festivals
and gurpurabs, Kirtan durbars,
seminars and short study courses
should be run.
f)
There is a vital need to
acquire an exclusive T. V. Channel
to relay kirtan from the Darbar
Sahib Amritsar and to propagate
the faith by serials and episodes
connected with the Sikh History.
g) Wearing of patka by the
Sikh boys in the training institution
and gurdwaras should be
discouraged.

h) Hundreds of Khalsa colleges

and schools were opened during
the last 90 years with a specific
purpose of promoting Sikh ideology
and way of life. The desired result
has not been achieved. The aspect
needs study by experts to effect
improvement.
Bhai Nand Lal Goya had
maintained that the Sikh identity
cannot be separated from his
personal appearance. A person
without full hair cannot call
himself a Sikh. Bhai Taru Singhs
demand to his executioner to
remove his scalp instead of his
hair bears testimony to this
conviction. The term Sehajdhari
Sikh and clean shaven Sikh are,
as such misnomers.
Apostasy is dangerous trend.
There is a deep subtle attempt by
the vested interest to encourage it
in order to banish Sikhism or to
bring into their fold. Let the Sikhs
to be aware of it and wake up the
reality.
