I. Word Problems for Oblique Triangles

1. A flagpole is situated at the top of a building 120 ft tall. From a point in the same
horizontal plane as the base of the building, the angles of elevation of the top and bottom
of the flagpole are 64.7o and 59.2o respectively. How tall is the flagpole?
2. At 9 am, a boat leaves a pier on a course of 62.7 o at 8 knots. At 10 am, another boat
leaves the same pier at a course of 109 o at 10 knots. At noon, (a) what is the distance
between the boats and (b) what is the bearing from the first boat to the second?

down the embankment to the ground is 16 feet. What is the angle at which the
embankment is inclined to the horizontal?
4. A triangular piece of land with vertices at A, B, and C is to be enclosed by a fence.
However, it was discovered that the surveyors mark at point C was missing. From a
deed to a property, it was determined that AB is 510 m long and BC is 445 m long. How
much fencing is needed, in meters, if the acute angle A is 55.3o?
5. On a hill, inclined at an angle of 14.2o with the horizontal, stands a vertical tower. At a
point P, 62.5 meters down the hill from the foot of the tower, the angle of elevation of the
top of the tower is 43.6o. How tall is the tower?
6. The lengths of two sides of a parallelogram are 7.4 cm and 9.2 cm, and one of the
diagonals has a length of 6.2 cm. What is the area of the parallelogram?
7. A pole casts a shadow 15 m long when the angle of elevation of the sun is 65 o. If the pole
is leaned 18o from the vertical directly toward the sun, what is the length of the pole?
