Die drei Fassungen:

1938-39. Die Erde bewegt sich/ Leben des Galilei. Entstanden

im dnischen Exil.

1945-46. Galileo. Entstanden in den USA (amerikanisches

Exil). Er nahm nderungen vor.

1954-56.Leben des Galilei. Entstanden in Berlin

Die wesentlichen Unterschiede liegen zwischen der 1. und 2.

Fassung. Die 3.ist eine Rckbersetzung der 2. in die Deutsche
Sprache.
Brechts Quellenstudien umschlossen Werke von und ber Galilei.
Der Handlungsverlauf des Leben des Galilei hlt sich an den
Lebenslauf des historischen Galileo Galilei. Das Buch ist in 15 Kapitel
aufgeteilt. Jedes Kapitel blendet auf einen Lebensabschnitt Galileis.
Die Kapitel folgen einander zwar chronologisch, doch die zeitlichen
Abstnde zwischen den Kapiteln variieren. Manchmal liegen
zwischen ihnen Tage, manchmal auch Jahre.
Schreibstil: Geschrieben als episches Theater. Mit dieser Form des
Theaters versucht Bertolt Brecht durch die erzhlende Form und
durch Provokationen den Zuschauer aus seiner passiven Haltung zu
lsen und ihn zu einer kritischen Stellungnahme zu bewegen. In
Galileo gibt es fast keine Lieder oder kommentierende Monologe.
Nur in der 10. Szene.(Marktszene)
Thema: Brecht beschreibt den Kampf des Galilei gegen die
Unterdrckung der Kirche. Der Kampf um Wahrheit und Vernunft
sowie die Bedeutung der Wissenschaft fr den gesellschaftlichen

Fortschritt stehen im Mittelpunkt, wobei er die Situation in der

Renaissance
und
die
Situation
im
nationalsozialistischen
Deutschland gegenberstellt. Dies macht Brecht exemplarisch mit
dem Leben des Galilei.
Inhalt: Der Mathematiker und Physiker Galileo Galilei forscht mit
Hilfe seines Fernrohres und er beweist das kopernikanische Weltbild,
welches besagt, dass sich die Planeten um die Sonne drehen. Das
bisher geltende ptolemische Weltbild wird somit entkrftet, denn
es basiert auf der Annahme, dass sich die Sonne und die Planeten
um die Erde drehen. Die Ergebnisse Galileis werden als ketzerisch
bezeichnet und er muss sich in zwei Inquisitionsprozesse unter
Folterdrohungen wiederufen.
