A Memo from Mrs.

Mefford
Dear Parents,
Please make sure to look in InfoDirect for ideas of at-home activities that can be used to reinforce new concepts that
are discussed! Also please review letters, numbers, and Bible verses with them each week. We will focus a lot on
Thanksgiving this week. I will be incorporating lessons about Thanksgiving into each lesson in order to teach the importance of
celebrating and being thankful for all of our blessings both big and small! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
ask!!
Star Students:
Week of 11/17/2014: Landon Congleton
Week of 11/24/2014: Mrs. Mefford
Star Student Reminders: Please e-mail pictures and captions for the pictures to be placed in the Star Student section on
our website. On Monday, please bring pictures and a few items that your child likes that he or she can show his or her friends.
On Friday, please have your child bring a small treat for each of the 12 students in the class. There are 6 girls and 6 boys.
Phonics:
Letters: teaching that s sometimes sounds like z, Qq: Q says qu in queen; Q says qu, qu, qu
**At the end of this week, we will have learned all letters, so we will begin working on other phonics concepts.
Phonetic Blends: (all short vowel sounds) Z, Qu
Sight Words: reviewing learned sight words
Other Concepts: filling in missing vowels and choosing the correctly spelled word
**There will be a written evaluation on MONDAY.
Beginning Reading: The concept of reading circles and seat work will be explained on Wednesday, and our first day of reading
groups and seatwork will be Friday. Our first reading book will be My Blend and Word Book.
Handwriting: Z blends and words, Qq and q words, words using all learned letters
*There will be a handwriting evaluation on Thursday.
Bible:
Lessons: Jacob Meets His Match and Jacob Come Back
Memory Verse: "My son, give Me thine heart. Proverbs 23:26"
***While learning about Thanksgiving, we will also work on O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for
his mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 107:1, but there will not be a test on this verse
Oral Test: Friday, November 21, 2014 (recite both verse and reference)
Bible Treasure: The Lords Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 (does not have to be memorized at this point)
Math:
Counting: 0-100
Concepts: teaching 70s family and 80s family, adding 0, the One Addition Family, the Two Addition Family,
and counting by 10s
Writing: all numbers
**There will be a written evaluation on TUESDAY.
Social Studies: Mayflower, Pilgrims, Native Americans, the first Thanksgiving

Science: We will be learning fall crops and foods and creating a giant cornucopia consisting of the foods we discuss.

Other Notes:

1) We are planning a couple of things right now Our Thanksgiving party and our Christmas field trip. If you signed up to
help with the Thanksgiving party, please watch for information from Colleen Sicley regarding this party.
2) I have already received some of the field trip forms! Thanks for your quick response!! If you have not yet turned it in,
please return it as soon as you are able.
3) I have enjoyed meeting with parents over the past couple of weeks. I have a few parents who have not yet set up a
time to meet with me. Please let me know when you are available!
4) Also, if you still want to bring in items for Operation Christmas Child, please do so by Tuesday.
