Two defining moment while in office

September 11, 2001
Connected with people
I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these building down

will hear all of us soon

confidence and trust

Connects with individuals
Some employees dread it when their boss shows up. Reagan's people felt

encouraged because he connected with THEM.

Robert E Lee
- Visited his men at their campsite the day before every major battle

General Norman Schwarzkopf

- During Persian Gulf War, spent Christmas with the men and women so far away from their families
He shook the hand of every individual there
Walking slowly through the crowd

1. Connect with yourself- know who you are and have confidence
2. Communicating with openness and sincerity- people can smell a phony from a mile away
3. Know your audience- speak to what THEY care about, not you
4. Live your message- do what you say, build credibility
5. Go to where they are- be attuned to culture, education, background
6. Focus on them, not yourself- you will connect faster if its not about you
7. Believe in them- peoples opinions of us is based on what we can help THEM see in themselves

8. Offer direction and hope- leaders are dealers in hope

Employees exhibit loyalty and a strong work ethic

Vision of leader becomes the aspiration of the people
