Section 6.2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphing

A QUADRATIC EQUATION can be written in the form

ax2 + bx +c = 0 , (where a ≠ 0)

The solutions of a quadratic equation are called ROOTS of the equation.

ZEROS of the functions are the x-intercepts of its graph.

Ex1: Solve by graphing: x2 + 6x + 8 = 0

Step 1: Set equation equal to zero. Define a, b, and c.

Step 2: Find the axis of symmetry

Step 3: Create a table of values around the axis of symmetry.

x y = x2 + 6x + 8 y (x,y)

Step 4: Find the y-intercept.

Step 5: Plot points and GRAPH.

Step 6: Check solutions (ROOTS)

by substituting into the equation
KEY CONCEPT: a quadratic equation can have 1, 2, or 0 real solutions.

1 Real Solution 2 Real Solutions No solution

ST1: Solve by graphing: 3x2 +1= 6x

Step 1: Set equation equal to zero. Define a, b, and c.

Step 2: Find the axis of symmetry

Step 3: Create a table of values around the axis of symmetry.

x y = 3x2 - 6x + 1 y (x,y)

Step 4: Find the y-intercept.

Step 5: Plot points and GRAPH.

Step 6: Check solutions (ROOTS)

by substituting into the equation. If solution is not exact, then state the interval

EX 2: Find 2 real #s whose SUM is 6 and whose PRODUCT is 10, or show that no numbers exist.
