SUMMARY OF GRAMMAR
Note the following:
1. The accusative case: masculine nouns
Many verbs in German must be followed by a direct object. The article which
precedes the noun denotes the case. With singular masculine nouns the
definite article der changes to den in the accusative singular.
der Salat Ich den Salat.
derGeldbeutel__ Ich den Geldbeutel nicht.
2. The acusative case: personal pronouns
The personal pronoun er (third person singular, masculine) can stand in
place of a masculine noun, that is, a noun preceded by the article der. In the
accusative case, et changes to
der Salat Ich den Salat.

Ich Cfinde> ihn nicht.
The following expressions can be used:
to ask whether someone is certain that
he or she really does not have something: | Hast du den Geldbeutel (ihn)

to express annoyance when someone
Sorgets to tell you something immediately: Und das sagst du erst jetzt?
After Frau Berger, Andreas and Ex have finished their meal at the pizzeria, Frau
Berger pays for what she bas had to eat and drink. She also gives the waiter a tip.
Ober: Was bezahlen Sie?
Frau Berger: Ich bezahle den Salat, den Fisch und das Mineralwasser.
Ober: Das macht zweiundzwanzig Mark finfzig,

Andreas is about to pay the rest of the bill when he realises that he has forgotten his
wallet.
(The waiter turns to Andreas.)

Andreas: Ja. Und das Bier.
Ober: Das macht zehn Mark fiinfzig.
Andreas: Mein Geldbeutel! Ich finde meinen Geldbeutel nicht.

Andreas looks for bis wallet in vain. He has left his money in the hotel. And Ex
knew this all the time!

Andreas: So ein Mist! Ich finde ihn nicht. Hast du ihn wirklich nicht?
