FROM
the
MINES

COME ALL
YO U C OA L
MINERS

oal mining is exactly what youd expect

and the exact opposite of what youd
expect. For the last three months, the
LaFollette Press staff has worked to
assemble all the puzzle pieces to tell a cohesive
story about the role coal mining plays in Campbell
County. We found the mines to be dark and somewhat cramped, but infinitely safer than one might
think. We learned about regulations, rules and
laws that keep the miners from harm, and we
heard about companies that go above and beyond
the required work to keep their workers safe. We
spent an entire morning with a mining crew at
their office deep underground, watching them
mine coal. Were so thankful for the peek into the
lives of local miners, and we hope our readers
enjoy what we found.
