KUDOS

Congratulations to the children for their

tremendous efforts in performing in the Christmas
Poetry Caf. It was evident that the students
improved a lot in terms of their voice projection,
expression and use of actions. Thank you to all those
that came out to support this event. Also a great big
thank you to the parents and children that
contributed items to support the Shepherds of Good
Hope! The school collected a record number of items
once again.

RELIGION
The students in both grade 2 and 3 will begin the
New Year learning about the Epiphany and New Years
resolutions. We will also continue preparing the grade
2 children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The
sacrament date for St. Clare is Wednesday, January
28th at 7:00 p.m. We will be covering Bible stories
and scenarios which teach of Gods love and
forgiveness for all. Grade 3 students will continue to
learn about the parts of the mass and the prayers
and mysteries of the Rosary. We will also integrate
lessons from the Fully Alive Program that will assist
the children in their faith development.
LANGUAGE ARTS
The focus for grade 2 students in January will be
to learn about persuasive writing and using voice in
their writing. Grade 3 students will begin to use
symbols to self-edit their writing. They will read
stories related to their new science unit and the New
Year traditions. We will continue to make inferences
and connections in all the reading that we do as this
builds comprehension and capacity. Students are
encouraged to continue reading at home and
submitting their reading logs on a regular basis.

MATHEMATICS
Our focus this month for grade 2 will be on 2D
geometry. We will continue to practice our
numeration strategies while introducing and
practicing the use of subtraction facts throughout
the month. Grade 3 students will complete their unit
on 2D geometry and follow up with the unit in 3D
geometry.
SCIENCE
The children will continue learning about Matter
and Materials. They will continue to explore the
different properties surrounding matter. They are
enjoying the experiments they have done so far.
Part of this unit is also learning about safety for the
different concepts related to matter. Grade 3
students will begin exploring concepts associated
with the "Forces" unit. They will have the
opportunity to work with the chrome books to
explore forces in nature.

COMMUNICATION
It is important to ask your child what they are
learning about on a regular basis. Rather than asking,
What did you learn today? - which is too broad a
question for them, ask them more specifically, what
story was read, what was it about or what math or
science problem did they work on? We hope to go
tobogganing as soon as possible so please return the
letter about wearing a safety helmet as soon as
possible. Be sure to check for updates on the class
website 'shawclare14@weebly.com'.
If you have any questions please feel free to
contact me through a phone call or brief note in your
childs agenda.

Yours in education,
Katherine Shaw
