GROVES
MATH CHALLENGE
JANUARY 2015

!
!

During an after school lifting session, Coach Flaherty

instructed the players on the football team to lift 100
pounds using one bar weighing 45 pounds and any
combination of lifting plates. There are six different
weighted plates: 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 pounds. If
each and every football player on the team came up
with a different combination of plates to add to the bar
to get 100 pounds, then how many players are on the
football team?
*The bar may have different weights on each side or all
the weight on one side.
*5, 10, 5 would be the same combination as 5, 5, 10.
