Math 8 Part II Syllabus

Mrs. Hinds
Phone: 745-9450 ext. 5654 Email: hindse@floyd.k12.va.us
Website: https://edmo.do/j/tnnfjs

Supplies:
-

3 ring binder
Loose leaf paper
1 pack of 3x5 index cards
Pencils- ready to use
Highlighters- 3 colors, or 3 different colored pens or pencil
*Calculator Calculators will be supplied for in class use, but students will not be able to
take them home. It is highly recommended that students get a calculator to use at home if
they do not already have one. At school we will be using a TI-30Xa School edition Texas
Instrument scientific calculator.

Class rules:
-Respect Others
-Come to class prepared to learn
- Follow class procedures efficiently
*** Cell phones or any electronic devices that are not assigned to be used are NOT allowed.
Those items will be taken if they are used during class without permission.
What to expect throughout the school year:
-Bell work- Every day you are expected to complete your bell work, which will be clearly assigned on the
board. This will count towards your participation grade and is an easy way to help boost your grade.

-Projects-We will have a few fun projects throughout the year. These projects will be group or individual
and will require you to be creative while showing off your math skills.

-Homework- Expect homework! I will assign a reasonable amount of homework that will be counted as
a grade. This gives you a chance to show me your mastery, practice your skills and boost your grade.
Homework will be posted on the board and should be written down at the beginning of class. It will also
be posted on the website.

Tests/ quizzes- There will be test and quizzes throughout the school year. I will give you plenty of
notification on the tests, but occasionally we may have a pop quiz. Stay current on the website for study
guides and helpful tips.

Extra Help: If at any point you feel like you need extra help, please come see me. My schedule is posted
in my classroom.

Homework Policy: Homework counts for 25% of your grade. This is a significant portion, so it is important to get
your homework completed and turned in on time! Late homework will be counted, however there will be points
off for late work. I will assign a reasonable amount of work, which provides you with the opportunity to really help
your grade and show off your mastery of the subject. If you are sick or absent for any reason, please check the
website to know what your homework is. For excused absences, late homework will not be penalized as long as it
is turned in within a reasonable amount of time (which will be decided by me).

Grading Scale:
90-100 = A
80-89.5 = B
70-79.5 = C
60-69.5 = D
<60 = F
How your grade will be calculated:
Test, Quizzes and Projects: 60%
Homework: 25%
Class Participation& Notebook check: 15%
Subjects covered this year: We will cover the second half of the Math 8 topics, and we will also review
material covered in Part I to prepare for your SOL in the Spring.

Math 8 SOL Guidelines

Number and Number Sense
Focus: Relationships within the Real Number System
8.1
The student will
a) simplify numerical expressions involving positive exponents, using rational numbers, order of
operations, and properties of operations with real numbers; and
b) compare and order decimals, fractions, percents, and numbers written in scientific notation.
8.2
The student will describe orally and in writing the relationships between the subsets of the
real number system.
Computation and Estimation
Focus: Practical Applications of Operations with Real Numbers
8.3
The student will
a) solve practical problems involving rational numbers, percents, ratios, and proportions; and
b) determine the percent increase or decrease for a given situation.
8.4
The student will apply the order of operations to evaluate algebraic expressions for given
replacement values of the variables.
8.5
The student will
a) determine whether a given number is a perfect square; and
b) find the two consecutive whole numbers between which a square root lies.

Measurement
Focus: Problem Solving
8.6
The student will
a) verify by measuring and describe the relationships among vertical angles, adjacent angles,
supplementary angles, and complementary angles; and
b) measure angles of less than 360.
8.7
The student will
a) investigate and solve practical problems involving volume and surface area of prisms,
cylinders, cones, and pyramids; and
b) describe how changing one measured attribute of a figure affects the volume and surface area.
Geometry
Focus: Problem Solving with 2- and 3-Dimensional Figures
8.8
The student will
a) apply transformations to plane figures; and
b) identify applications of transformations.
8.9
The student will construct a three-dimensional model, given the top or bottom, side, and
front views.
8.10
The student will
a) verify the Pythagorean Theorem; and
b) apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
8.11
The student will solve practical area and perimeter problems involving composite plane
figures.
Probability and Statistics
Focus: Statistical Analysis of Graphs and Problem Situations
8.12
The student will determine the probability of independent and dependent events with and
without replacement.
8.13
The student will
a) make comparisons, predictions, and inferences, using information displayed in graphs; and
b) construct and analyze scatterplots.
Patterns, Functions, and Algebra
Focus: Linear Relationships
8.14
The student will make connections between any two representations (tables, graphs, words,
and rules) of a given relationship.
8.15
The student will
a) solve multistep linear equations in one variable with the variable on one and two sides of the
equation;
b) solve two-step linear inequalities and graph the results on a number line; and
c) identify properties of operations used to solve an equation.
8.16

The student will graph a linear equation in two variables.

8.17
The student will identify the domain, range, independent variable, or dependent variable in a
given situation.
