ADA 3MIP Summative:

Canadian Scene Study


TASK:

In this assignment you will be working in small assigned performance groups.


You will be given selected Canadian scripts, with an assigned role.
You are to rehearse, memorize and perform a 5-10 minute scene.
This performance activity will be used as a vehicle to assess students skills in the basic concepts of acting
including: script analysis, character analysis and creation, effective and communicative movement, vocal
control and pacing, stage presence, performance, and audience etiquette.
You have acquired skills and concepts throughout the semester which you can apply to this scene study in
order to help you develop in-depth, psychologically complex, characters and relationships.
You are expected to apply those acting, script analysis and character building skills and concepts learned as
you work to refine and polish your scene performances.

Individual tasks:
Character analysis
o You need to complete the attached character analysis worksheets in full for your own individual character
o Create a background history for your character if there isnt one provided to you by the playwright
o You will not be given an evaluation mark for your final performance without having these character
analysis sheets and process work completed and handed in

Script scoring
o You need to score your script thoroughly and identify beats and goals for yourself as an actor as you work
through this scene your beats need to be labelled with titles and actable verbs that help you tackle that
specific part of the script

Costumes and props


o You are expected to enhance your characterization and character development with the use of costumes

You need to fully immerse yourself into this character I should not see your own individual traits and
mannerisms on stage you need to embody this character (mind, soul, mannerisms, movement, style of
clothing, age, vocally, etc)

Canadian theme paragraph


o You need to write a formal paragraph which identifies the Canadian theme(s) inherit in your assigned
scene. There could be more than one discussed or inherit in the scene. Discuss the playwrights thematic
ideas and concepts thoroughly based on your own knowledge of Canadian themes in drama and theatre.
Also, discuss our own educated guess/opinion on the playwrights intended/target audience. Who is
he/she writing this play for?

REFLECTION
o In 250-500 words, evaluate yourself and your group members contribution and commitment to the
summative project. Did you complete enough work to develop the backstory for your character to bring
her/him to life on stage? How were you able to map your character to the greater play and make
meaningful connections on stage? How did you and your group members work together? How will you
use some of the skills from Drama this semester in contexts outside the classroom?
