Week 1 Reading and Spelling Words

Dear Family,
Now that your child is in the second half of second grade, the Backpack Pages are a little
different. Your childs weekly spelling test will cover 12 Memory Words and no Pattern Words
rather than 15 words of both types. The reason is that the Memory Words are harder now.
Remember to have your child practice these steps with each Memory Word:
1. Hear the word.
2. See the word. (Look at it and then
close your eyes and imagine it.)

3. Say the word.

4. Say the letters in the word aloud.
5. Write the word as you say the letters.

Instead of spelling Pattern Words, you child needs to practice reading them. Have him read the
list a couple of times each night until he can read all the words correctly.
Thank you for the important support you give your child in learning to read and spell!

Practice reading your Pattern Words. Read them aloud then silently to yourself and then
to someone in your family.

Write each Memory Word on an index card. Put the cards facedown. Draw a card and
read the word to yourself. Then spell the word aloud without looking at the card, and
have a family member tell you the word. Then your family member draws a card and
spells the word aloud. You say the word and spell it again.
