Thing 10: Search Strategies

Task 1
Topic: Wolves
e-Library Elementary http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/libweb/k6/do/search
Kids InfoBits http://go.galegroup.com/ps/start.do?p=ITKE&u=lom_accessmich&authCount=1
Appropriateness
o e-Library: Some of the resources that are provided on the database arent exactly
relevant to the topic be researched.
o Kids InfoBits: This website may be more appropriate for young children than the
other website. The links do not take you to the exact website, but they do cite the
sources and provide the information needed.
Usability
o e-Library: The links work and there are no spelling errors on the websites; it is
easy to navigate.
o Kids InfoBits: The links do work and there are no spelling errors on the websites.
This website I feel is easier to use and user friendly. One of the better resources
found from this database is Wolves: Wolf Ways.
Content
o e-Library: the types of content that e-Library provides for the topic wolves are
Books, Pictures, Magazines, and News.
o Kids InfoBits: the types of content that InfoBits provides are Newspapers,
Magazines, Books, Maps, Audio/Video, Pictures, and Transcripts. A majority of
the resources on wolves are within magazines.
Credibility
o e-Library: ProQuest is the logo featured at the foot of the webpages. This same
search engine is used at the college level and is a database that I have used before
to find resources for research papers.
o Kids InfoBits: Gale Cengage Learning is the logos that are featured at the foot of
the webpages. Questions or concerns can be addressed at the resources provided
at the Contact Us link.

Task 2
Scholastic Book Flix http://bkflix.grolier.com/
Grades PreK 5. The topics are divided into certain categories. Each of the book choices
is narrated.
Early World of Learning http://worldbookonline.com/ewol/home?subacct=O6106
Grades PreK 5. World Book Products. This website is also narrated as well as
interactive. There isnt just books on the website, but games, videos, and printables.
e-Library Elementary http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/libweb/k6/do/search
Grades PreK 5. This website is meant more for doing research. It is a kid friendly
version of ERIC or JStore.
Kids InfoBits http://go.galegroup.com/ps/start.do?p=ITKE&u=lom_accessmich&authCount=1

Grades PreK 5. There are twelve categories that students can choose to look through;
students can also search their own topics.
World Book Kids http://www.worldbookonline.com/kids/home
Grades PreK 5.

Task 3
Using BASIC Evaluation
Website 1: http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus.html
URL does not end in .com, .net, .org, .gov, or .edu.
The website and subsections has one author; Lyle Zapato. His link leads back to his blog
http://zapatopi.net/.
Made in Cascadia

This site seems to be created to promote and inform viewers on octopuses that
live in trees; save them from being endangered.
There are links to allow you to follow the support group on tree octopuses. It also
promotes the gift shops merchandise such as bumper sticker.
You can make a box of the octopuss favorite Halloween candy or print out blue prints to
make a house for them.

Many of the pictures and resources provided are sci-fi, comic related and they
have dates with them. Other photos are photo shopped, and you can tell which
ones are not real and which are edited. You can tell the pictures are of many
rubber or stuffed animal toy octopuses.
There are some grammar and spelling errors.
Pages are somewhat organized, but they are very cluttered with information.
There isnt a page stating where the information and research was taken from. Therefore I
assume all the information used is the website authors own research, but not cited.
I would not include this website in my bibliography.
Website 2: http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html
This site is an old friend from Googles past, kept in its original form. Enjoy!
Note: This page was posted for April Fool's Day - 2002.
This website is designed by two men at Stanford University; Larry Page and Sergey Brin,
founders of Google.
No, I would not include this in my bibliography. As it has already been stated, this page
was posted for April Fools day. The information is not true, but a joke about how
Google get their information so quickly and accurately.

Task 4
One resource that I have used many times before already is Easy Bib http://easybib.com/
I have used this website many times for articles and resources that I have a hard time putting
together a citation for a bibliography for research papers.
