Flower sunburst Granny Squares

This is not an original pattern: it is merged from on-line granny square instructions (American crochet
abbreviations) and stitching assistance from Jan Eaton’s 200 Crochet Blocks book.

Cascade 220 wool – various colors

5.00 mm/H crochet hook

Stitches used:
Slip stitch (sl) chain stitch (ch) Single crochet (sc) Double crochet (dc) Treble crochet (trc)
Yarn over (yo) Puff stitch Cluster stitch

For one block:

Chain 4; join with sl stitch to form ring.

ROUND 1: Chain 4 to count as the first trc (treble crochet), work 15 more trc in the
ring; join with a sl stitch to the top of beginning of chain 4. (16 trc). Fasten off.

ROUND 2: Attach your next color with a sl stitch in any trc space, ch 1: PUFF stitch
in the same space and in each space around; join with a sl stitch to the top of the first
puff stitch. (16 puff sts). Fasten off.

PUFF STITCH: { yarn over, insert the hook into the space, yo hook again and pull a long loop
through} – there will be 3 loops on your hook. Repeat {this} two more times, until there are 7 loops on
the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through all 7 loops. Work an extra chain stitch (ch
1) at the top of the puff to complete the stitch.

ROUND 3: Attach next color with a sl stitch in the ch1 space of any puff st, chain 1:
then work a CLUSTER stitch (to have 4 legs in each stitch), ch 1; in each of the rest of
the puff st spaces, repeat {cluster stitch and ch 1} around for 16 cluster sts. Fasten off.
First cluster stitch will appear to have 5 legs because of the sl stitch beginning.
CLUSTER STITCH: {yarn over, insert and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops as in half
dc}, repeat 4 times so that you have 5 loops on the hook, yo and pull through all remaining 5 loops}

ROUND 4: Attach next color with a sl st to any ch 1 space, chain 4 to count as first
trc, work { 2trc, ch 1, 3 trc} in this first corner space, ch 1; work 3 double crochet (dc)
stitches in each of the next 3 cluster spaces, ch 1, {3 trc + ch 1 + 3 trc for next corner};
repeat around the next three sides of block (do not ch 1 in-between the 3 dc groups
– only right before and after the trc corner units). Complete round by a sl stitch at
the top of the first chain at the first corner. Fasten off.

ROUND 5: (finish as you wish) or work single crochet stitch around with two single
crochet stitches in each of the 4 corners.
