A hub connects multiple computers together in a

network.
It makes a Local Areas Network (LAN).
Daisy chain hubs to allow more computers to join the
network.
But they dont have as much intelligence as a switch
has, see the next slide for more details.

 It is a small device that joins multiple computers

together on a LAN (Local Areas Network).

They are different to hubs because they can inspect
data packets as they are received to determine where to
send them.
Network switches are nearly identical to hubs, but a
switch is more intelligent.

 A router is a device that connects two or more

networks.
It is commonly used for connecting home internet.
It transfers information intelligently and quickly.
It knows which computers are connected to it.

 Before Internet connections most computers

connected to the Internet by telephone lines.

Telephone lines are supposed to carry voices not
analogue signals though.
A modem joins the computer to the analogue
telephone line.

 A Bridge joins two networks together so it looks like

one large network.

A bridge is less expensive.
Both networks have to be using the same rules.
A bridge is less capable than a router.

 Computers that are connected to a network, needs to

have a network card.

Most modern computers have these devices built into
the computer.
In laptop it has this wirelessly built in.

 A server is a place that lots of computers share a large

amount of information with each other.

For example this schools are on a server and all share
information on the shared area.

 A proxy server is setup to share things usually an

internet connection.
It works as a buffer between the Internet and a
network.
Proxy servers monitor internet storage.
You can use proxy servers to block offensive content on
the internet.
