Report on the applicant (including the need for the use of neutron and/or synchrotron radiation)
I was in charge of supervisor of Nicola Sodini, who carried out his PhD in Wood Science at DISTAF
(a Department of the University of Florence). His thesis work has been on the investigation of the
influence of Hemicelluloses on time dependent behavior of wood.
As an important part of his research work was on the characterisation of the physical behaviour of
the material, he has been particularly involved in the collaboration with SYRMEP group (at
ELETTRA Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Trieste) in order to develop and improve the use of
micro tomography for density characterization of wood. The studies were carried out both on recent
and on archaeological wood, and some papers have been already published and others are under
publications.
During all the phases of the projects he has demonstrated a high level of interest and good skills for
achieving the proposed results, as well as he has a good feeling for team work.
I consider this training course as an excellent chance to improve his personal, and more in general the
department, knowledge about the potentiality of synchrotron and neutron radiation like a powerful
toll that can be used on the study and the characterization of the cultural heritage.
