Answer All Questions

1. Consider the system shown in Fig. P1. A storage tank contains 505 kg of water (500 kg of
liquid and 5 kg of vapor) in equilibrium at P1 = 100 kPa. Heat is now added to the water. The
pressure regulator, which keeps the pressure constant, does not open before the water pressure
in the tank reaches 2 MPa. Saturated vapor exits the tank at Pe = 2 MPa and flows into a
constant pressure heater, which it leaves at T3 = 500oC. The steam then enters an adiabatic
turbine and is discharged as saturated vapor at P4 = 25 kPa. The process ends when the total
work generated from the turbine amounts to W = 350 MJ. Notice that there is no change in
pressure or temperature across the pressure regulator. Neglect all changes in kinetic and
potential energies throughout the system. When applying thermodynamic laws, you must
define the control mass or the control volume on which you applied the laws.
(a) (8 marks) Determine the amount of heat added in the heater in [MJ].
(b) (12 marks) Determine the amount of heat added to the water in the tank in [MJ].
2. A frictionless piston/cylinder device contains 0.1 kg of water at T1 = 110oC and P1 = 200 kPa.
The system undergoes two processes as follows: Process 12 is a reversible isothermal
process up to x2 = 1 (saturated vapor), and process 23 is a reversible adiabatic process up to
P3 = 800 kPa. Neglect any changes in kinetic and potential energies during both processes.
When applying thermodynamic laws, you must define the control mass or the control
volume on which you applied the laws.
(a) (7 marks) Calculate the work done in each of the two processes ( 1W2 and 2W3 ) in [kJ].
(b) (3 marks) Sketch a well-marked Ts diagram showing all state points and the two
process lines. You must include enough information on the diagram to justify the location
of each of the three state points.
