Abhiney Srivastava
IIT-Delhi

How to start ?

Ask your seniors

Ask your professors

Anyone who has already been out for an

internship.
Generally professors have contacts with
universities abroad.
Professors also have connections with
industries and Research labs.

Use Google

Best search engine (not a news right ?)

First things First

Do not try to Just to go abroad for the
sake of it.
Practical training is most important thing
we do so do not go to any stupid place
where you will not do anything.
There are many place which are stupid
even in India.

Where to go ?

Companies

Most difficult to find internships

Nice compensations
You have to work because you are paid
Additional documents like ZAV or work permit

Research labs
Universities

Easy but less compensations

Companies
Try to find list of links for companies
rather than links to individual companies.
Examples for Chemical Engineering

http://www.mandthelp.com/table_of_contents.
htm (List of Fortune 500 Companies in 2003)

Look for Jobs or Careers section.

Companies
Quality rather than quantity
Do not try short cuts.
Fill complete forms wherever applicable
instead of just sending resume to
info@company.com
Companies having forms are good options
than companies without any information.
Many companies have specific dates, keep
track of them.

Universities/Research Labs
Try to find professors with similar research
interests like you.
Blindly applying to all professors will not
work.
Dont apply to more than two or three
professors in one department in same
university.
50 good applications are better than 5000
blind ones.

Resume

Resume is always individual, do not try to copy

anyone elses resume.
Do not use names like Ch-210n or Mass
Transfer-2, people are interested in content.
Try to mention projects (not assignments) done
(if any).
Do not mention 10 projects in 2 years of studies,
be realistic.
Brevity is the soul of wit.
You can always have a look at some resumes to
have an idea of format.

Tips.
If you are applying to France, there is a
possibility of Grant from French embassy
(airfare + 600 euros/month).
Have a look at DAAD internships for
Germany.
If you know languages, please mention
them in your Resume.
Try to mention your interest in specific
area (in cover letter) when applying to a
professor.

Tips .
Dont give up when you receive negative
replies.
First positive reply and Game over.
If you get multiple options, please inform
or pass them on to other students.
Always do your homework well in
advance.
You can start the process anytime you
want.
Do not refer anyone anywhere without
informing them.

Thank you
Good luck
