Tutorial 12
Multiloop Control
Description
Tutorial 12 is about multi-loop control designs. The design is evaluated. A modification
will be suggested if the control design cant function in order to achieve all of the desired
function. The given systems are heat exchanger with bypass, flow and pressure of a gas in two
vessels, heated and stirred tank chemical reactor and flash drum. The systems will be analyzed
using qualitative process principles.

Generalization
For the first system, it is concluded that the system is controllable if quantitative values
are not given. The valves strongly affect the flow and temperature. For the second system, the
proposed design is not controllable. The driving force, pressure difference, and the flow rate
depend on a particular controller (valve 3) but from the control system, neither of the two
variables is adjusted. For the third system which is the chemical reactor, it shows that the
temperature of the reactor is controlled by two controllers with the same set point values,
however, this is not acceptable. A steady-state system will not be reached because many
combinations of precooling and jacket cooling will result in the same reactor temperature. Thus,
removal of one controller is suggested. For the fourth system, the controls are evaluated to be
poor since the seven control objectives are not met. This evaluation must be paired up with a new
control system that will be able to correct each of the deficiencies.
